School Counselor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school counselor in New York?
To become a school counselor in New York you must obtain a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) certificate from the New York State Education Department. This requires a master's degree in school counseling from a registered program, completion of a supervised internship in a school setting, and passing the required state certification exams. You apply for certification through NYSED's TEACH online system, and most public school districts require the certificate before you can be hired.
Which companies hire school counselors in New York?
Employers hiring school counselors in New York right now include Good Shepherd Services, Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, and Sun River Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large public school systems, SUNY and CUNY campuses, and nonprofit social services organizations are consistently among the most active sources of openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most school counselor jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Bronx have the most school counselor openings in New York. New York City leads by a wide margin due to the sheer size of the NYC Department of Education, while Buffalo and Yonkers generate steady demand through their large public school districts and nearby community college systems that regularly recruit for college advising roles.
Are there remote school counselor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. School counseling is inherently in-person work, with most roles requiring direct, on-site contact with students. About 0% of school counselor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the roles most likely to offer any remote component are college advising, career coaching, and administrative counseling coordinator positions rather than traditional K-12 building-level roles.
How can I get hired as a school counselor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your supervised internship inside a New York school district, since many districts convert strong interns to full-time hires after graduation. Large employers like the NYC Department of Education and BOCES organizations in suburban counties hire new graduates into provisional positions while candidates complete certification requirements. Coming from a related role such as school social worker, academic advisor, or classroom teacher with a counseling master's degree is a common lateral move, and holding or being eligible for the NYSED PPS certificate gives candidates a clear edge over applicants still working toward it.
Where can I find and apply to school counselor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to school counselor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, location, and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
