School Counselor Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school counselor in Washington?
You become a school counselor in Washington by earning a master's degree in school counseling and applying for certification through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, known as OSPI. Washington requires candidates to complete an approved counselor preparation program, pass the required West-E School Counselor assessment, and document a supervised residency experience in a school setting. OSPI issues the School Counselor certificate, which is required to work in any Washington public school.
Which companies hire school counselors in Washington?
Employers hiring school counselors in Washington right now include Associated Recreation Council, Leidos, and Edmonds School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Washington's large urban districts and expanding suburban systems consistently post openings, particularly as student mental health needs continue to drive counselor-to-student ratio improvements statewide.
Which Washington cities have the most school counselor jobs?
Seattle, Tacoma, and Redmond account for the highest concentration of school counselor openings in Washington. Seattle leads because of its large, well-funded urban district and neighboring Bellevue and Renton systems, while Spokane and Tacoma anchor hiring in eastern Washington and the South Puget Sound region, respectively, where growing student populations and state funding initiatives continue to support counselor positions.
How can I get hired as a school counselor in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your OSPI-required residency through an approved Washington school counseling program, which places you in a district before you graduate. Larger districts including Seattle Public Schools and Spokane Public Schools regularly accept practicum students and sometimes hire them directly upon certification. Candidates coming from roles such as school social worker, student support specialist, or family liaison have a strong lateral advantage. Holding a current OSPI certificate and a portfolio documenting your residency hours gives you a clear edge over candidates still completing requirements.
Where can I find and apply to school counselor jobs in Washington?
You can find and apply to school counselor jobs in Washington on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts and organizations across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your certification level and preferred grade band, and apply directly to the positions that fit your background.
