Finance Professor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a finance professor in New York?
Becoming a finance professor in New York requires completing a doctoral degree, typically a PhD or DBA in finance, economics, or a related discipline, from an accredited institution. New York does not issue a state license specifically for postsecondary faculty, so hiring decisions rest on academic credentials, research output, and teaching evaluations. Candidates typically enter through postdoctoral fellowships, visiting assistant professor roles, or adjunct positions at New York's many business schools before moving into tenure-track appointments.
Which companies hire finance professors in New York?
New York finance professor roles are posted by St. John Fisher University, SUNY Polytechnic, and Columbia University and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. New York's density of research universities, business schools, and professional graduate programs makes it one of the most active academic finance hiring markets in the country.
Which New York cities have the most finance professor jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Utica have the most finance professor openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share by far, anchored by the concentration of top-ranked business schools and financial industry partnerships there, while Buffalo and Albany see demand from their regional universities and state university system campuses that maintain active finance faculties.
How can I get hired as a finance professor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is adjunct or visiting instructor work at one of New York City's many business schools, where institutions such as CUNY, Pace University, and St. John's University regularly hire candidates who are completing or have recently finished a doctoral program. Building a teaching portfolio through adjunct courses, pairing it with even one working paper or conference presentation, and targeting lecturer or clinical faculty roles, which carry lighter research requirements than tenure-track positions, opens doors quickly in New York's large and active higher education market.
