Teaching Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a teaching in New York?
To teach in New York you must hold a New York State teaching certificate issued by the New York State Education Department, known as NYSED. You earn initial certification by completing a registered teacher preparation program, passing the required New York State Teacher Certification Examinations including the edTPA performance assessment, and submitting your application through NYSED's TEACH online system. Most classroom positions also require a fingerprint clearance through the New York State Education Department before you can begin work.
Which companies hire teachings in New York?
Employers hiring teachings in New York right now include Syracuse University, Long Island University, and Zeta Charter Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's education sector includes one of the largest public school systems in the nation alongside a dense network of charter schools, private independent schools, and community college systems, giving candidates a wide range of employer types to consider.
Which New York cities have the most teaching jobs?
The cities with the most teaching openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Syracuse. New York City dominates the volume given the sheer size of its public school system and the density of charter networks and private institutions, while Buffalo and other upstate cities generate consistent demand through their own public districts and regional colleges serving large student populations.
Are there remote teaching jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're far less common than in other fields. About 4% of teaching openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most instruction is still expected to take place in person. The roles most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are curriculum developers, instructional designers, education technology specialists, and some special education consulting positions.
How can I get hired as a teaching in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a student teaching placement in a New York district while finishing your preparation program, since many districts hire from their own placement pools. The New York City Department of Education runs the NYC Teaching Fellows program specifically for career changers and new graduates entering high-need schools, and the New York City Residency programs place candidates in classrooms with mentorship before full certification. Candidates who hold a bilingual extension or special education credential gain a significant edge in the New York City and Buffalo markets where those needs are most acute.
