Teaching Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a teaching in California?
To teach in California you must earn a credential from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the state agency that licenses all public school teachers. That process requires completing an accredited teacher preparation program, verifying subject matter competency through a California Subject Examinations for Teachers exam or approved coursework, and passing the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment. Most candidates also complete a supervised student teaching placement before the credential is issued.
Which companies hire teachings in California?
Employers hiring teachings in California right now include San Francisco Unified School District, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and University of California Merced, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size means hiring runs year-round across large urban districts, community college districts, and an unusually large charter school sector concentrated in Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
Which California cities have the most teaching jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Merced have the most teaching openings in California right now. Los Angeles dominates by sheer scale given that LA Unified is one of the largest school districts in the country, while San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's dense network of public districts, charter schools, and community colleges serving rapidly growing student populations.
Are there remote teaching jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in desk-based fields because most teaching roles require in-person instruction. About 4% of teaching openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, skewing toward adult education, online charter schools, curriculum development, and instructional coaching roles rather than traditional classroom positions.
How can I get hired as a teaching in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a student teaching placement through a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved program, which most large districts require before extending a hire. Los Angeles Unified, San Diego Unified, and the California Community Colleges system all run resident teacher and intern credential programs that let you teach under supervision while finishing your credential. Candidates without a full credential can apply for substitute or paraprofessional roles at these same districts to build classroom hours, and a completed CSET subject-matter exam gives applicants a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to teaching jobs in California?
You can find and apply to teaching jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across districts, charter networks, and higher education institutions. Search the listings, find roles that fit your credential and subject area, and apply directly to the employer.
