University Settlement partners with 40,000+ New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn every year to build on our collective strengths as we achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For nearly 140 years, we’ve fought poverty and systemic inequality by building highly effective social services in collaboration with our neighbors. Established in 1886 as the first Settlement House in the United States, we bring the values of that movement into the 21st century by meeting New Yorkers where they live, listening deeply to all perspectives, and creating space for responsive cooperation.
Joining with our neighbors to make stable foundations where people of all ages can grow and pursue their dreams, we build community strength. We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equality, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, youth development, healthy aging, mental health and wellness, English classes for adult immigrants, community centers, and the arts.

Assistant Teacher Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant teacher in New York?
To become an assistant teacher in New York, you must obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. There are three levels: Level I for candidates still completing coursework, Level II requiring an associate degree or equivalent college credits, and Level III requiring a bachelor's degree. Candidates must also pass the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills exam and complete a fingerprint-supported background check before working in public schools.
Which companies hire assistant teachers in New York?
Employers hiring assistant teachers in New York right now include The Child Center of NY, Ahrc Nyc, and The Fedcap, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large urban school districts and nonprofit special education providers tend to post the highest volume of assistant teacher openings year-round.
Which New York cities have the most assistant teacher jobs?
The cities with the most assistant teacher openings in New York are Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn. New York City drives the largest share of listings due to the sheer scale of the Department of Education, while Buffalo and other upstate cities see strong demand from their own city school districts and regional special education agencies serving surrounding communities.
Are there remote assistant teacher jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Assistant teaching is inherently hands-on, requiring in-person support for students in physical classrooms. About 0% of assistant teacher openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve online tutoring support, virtual special education assistance, or administrative coordination rather than direct daily classroom work.
How can I get hired as a assistant teacher in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a paraprofessional or classroom aide position in a New York City, Buffalo, or Yonkers school district, which routinely hire candidates still completing their required college credits. Programs like the New York City Teaching Fellows and district-run grow-your-own paraprofessional pipelines provide structured on-the-job training. Volunteer or paid experience in afterschool programs, summer camps, or tutoring centers strengthens an application, and obtaining a Level I New York Teaching Assistant certificate gives candidates a clear hiring edge even before they finish their degree.
Where can I find and apply to assistant teacher jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to assistant teacher jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your certification level and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
