Assistant Teacher Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant teacher in New York?
To work as a certified teaching assistant in New York, you must obtain a Teaching Assistant certificate issued by the New York State Education Department. Level I is a provisional certificate available to candidates with some college coursework, while Level III requires an associate degree or equivalent college credits and passing the New York State Teaching Assistant Assessment. Most public school districts require at least Level I certification before hiring.
Which companies hire assistant teachers in New York?
Companies currently hiring assistant teachers in New York include Healthy Kids Extended Day Program, The Learning Experience, and BrightPath Kids, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's large urban districts and growing charter networks tend to post the highest volume of openings throughout the school year.
Which New York cities have the most assistant teacher jobs?
Brooklyn, New York, and Bronx have the most assistant teacher openings in New York. New York City drives the majority of listings given the size of its public school system and the concentration of charter networks headquartered there, while Buffalo and smaller upstate cities see consistent demand through their own district systems and regional BOCES organizations.
Are there remote assistant teacher jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Assistant teaching is an inherently hands-on, classroom-based role, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 0% of assistant teacher openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions typically involve virtual tutoring or online special education support rather than traditional classroom assistance.
How can I get hired as a assistant teacher in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to New York City Department of Education or a regional BOCES as a per-diem or substitute teaching assistant, which requires only a Level I certificate and minimal prior classroom experience. Building hours in a school setting this way often leads to full-time offers. Candidates with childcare, tutoring, or after-school program experience at organizations like the YMCA or local community centers also compete effectively for entry-level roles.
Where can I find and apply to assistant teacher jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to assistant teacher jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find positions that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
