Tips for Your Clinical Assistant Professor Job Search
Tailor your CV to academic norms
Academic CVs differ from resumes. List every publication, presentation, clinical appointment, and teaching role in reverse chronological order. Hiring committees expect a complete record, so omitting even minor conference posters can raise questions about your productivity.
Target departments that match your specialty
Search by department, not just job title. A clinical assistant professor role in a nursing school requires a different profile than one in a medical school or allied health program. Filtering by department early saves you from applying to poor fits.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists clinical assistant professor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a teaching philosophy statement
Most faculty applications require a teaching philosophy statement alongside your CV. Write one that connects your clinical experience to your classroom approach. Generic statements stand out for the wrong reasons, so use specific examples from your practice or mentoring history.
Ask smart questions during campus visits
When you reach the on-campus interview stage, ask about the department's clinical affiliation agreements, student-to-faculty ratios, and expectations around committee service. These questions signal that you understand the full scope of the role, not just the teaching component.
Negotiate startup support, not just salary
In clinical faculty offers, protected research time, lab space, equipment budgets, and administrative support are often negotiable even when base pay is fixed by a faculty salary scale. Ask for your priorities in writing before you sign the offer letter.

Demand is highest at institutions with large health science programs and affiliated teaching hospitals.

How do you become a clinical assistant professor?

Develop a portfolio of scholarly work, then apply to faculty positions that align with your specialty and the institution's mission.
Can you get a clinical assistant professor job with little teaching experience?
Yes, candidates with strong clinical backgrounds can secure clinical assistant professor roles even with limited formal teaching experience. Institutions value recent clinical expertise highly, especially in nursing, pharmacy, and allied health fields. Highlight any preceptoring, mentoring, continuing education delivery, or supervision of students or residents you have done, as these count as relevant teaching experience.
What does the clinical assistant professor interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screening by a search committee, followed by a campus interview that includes a teaching demonstration or research presentation, one-on-one meetings with faculty and department leadership, and a student Q&A session. Final-round candidates usually meet with a dean or department chair before an offer is extended. The full process commonly unfolds over several weeks.
