Tips for Your Faculty Position Job Search
Tailor your CV to each institution
Research universities weight publications and grant history heavily, while teaching-focused colleges prioritize classroom experience and pedagogy. Reorder your CV sections to lead with what each employer values most before you apply to any opening.
Write a teaching philosophy that shows evidence
Most faculty applications require a teaching philosophy statement. Avoid abstract ideals and instead describe specific assignments, student outcomes, or course designs you've implemented. Search committees read hundreds of statements and respond to concrete examples over general principles.
Target openings at your actual career stage
Filter openings by rank: assistant, associate, full, lecturer, or adjunct. Applying to positions above your current stage without a clear publication record or tenure dossier wastes your time and the committee's attention.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists faculty position openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match your field and career stage and apply directly to each listing before deadlines close.
Prepare a job talk that reads the room
Most faculty searches include a public job talk. Find out whether the audience is specialists or a general departmental audience, then calibrate your technical depth accordingly. A talk pitched too narrow for a mixed room is one of the most common reasons candidates are passed over.
Negotiate startup packages, not just salary
Once you receive an offer, ask about lab startup funds, course release in year one, conference travel support, and pre-tenure sabbatical eligibility. These terms are often more flexible than base pay and matter more over the long run.
Faculty Position Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most faculty positions?
The companies hiring the most faculty positions right now include Kennesaw State University, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and The George Washington University, with the largest share of openings in Georgia, Tennessee, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are spread across research universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and professional schools.
How many faculty position jobs are remote?
About 1% of faculty position openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than in most professional fields given the on-campus teaching expectations of most roles. Online-only programs and continuing education departments tend to offer the highest share of remote teaching positions.
How do you become a faculty position?
Earning a terminal degree in your discipline is the standard first step, followed by publishing peer-reviewed work and building a teaching record through graduate assistantships, adjunct roles, or postdoctoral positions. You then apply to open lines with a complete academic dossier that includes a CV, cover letter, teaching philosophy, research statement, and writing samples. Securing strong letters of recommendation from established scholars in your field is essential before applying to tenure-track lines.
Can I get a faculty position with little or no teaching experience?
Yes, though your application needs to compensate with other strengths. Candidates with limited formal teaching experience can highlight guest lectures, workshop facilitation, mentorship of junior researchers, or curriculum development work. Applying to postdoctoral fellowships with a teaching component, visiting instructor roles, or adjunct positions first is a practical way to build a classroom record before competing for tenure-track lines.
What does the faculty position interview process look like?
Most searches begin with a screening interview, often conducted by video, where the committee evaluates your research agenda and fit with departmental needs. Finalists are typically invited for a campus visit that includes a public job talk, a research presentation, individual meetings with faculty and administrators, and sometimes a sample class session. The full process from application deadline to offer can stretch across several months.
Where can I find and apply to faculty position jobs?
You can find and apply to faculty position jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from institutions across the United States. Search for roles that match your field, rank, and geographic preferences, then apply directly to each listing. No waiting or intermediaries are involved.
