Faculty Position Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a faculty position job in San Francisco?
San Francisco's faculty hiring centers on its research universities, academic medical centers, and community colleges, with the strongest openings in biomedical sciences, nursing and allied health, and liberal arts. Candidates who have published research, hold a terminal degree in their field, and have clinical or industry experience alongside teaching credentials stand out locally. Targeting institutions anchored in Mission Bay, Parnassus, and the City College district gives you the best coverage of active searches.
Which companies hire faculty positions in San Francisco?
Employers hiring faculty positions in San Francisco right now include University of California, San Francisco, Gladstone Institutes, and UC San Francisco Academic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. San Francisco's hiring base skews toward research-intensive universities, academic health systems, and community college districts that serve one of the densest urban student populations on the West Coast.
Are there remote faculty position jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though most faculty roles involve on-campus teaching, lab supervision, or clinical instruction that limits full-remote arrangements. About 0% of faculty position openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with the remote share concentrated in online-program coordination, curriculum development, and upper-division lecture courses at institutions that have expanded asynchronous offerings.
How can I get a faculty position job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is an adjunct or visiting lecturer role, which City College of San Francisco and the California College of the Arts regularly post for candidates who hold a master's degree but lack a full publication record. Serving as a graduate teaching assistant at a local research university, then converting to a lecturer contract, is another common route. Demonstrating classroom experience, even through guest lectures or professional workshops, strengthens an application considerably in this market.
Which industries hire the most faculty positions in San Francisco?
Most faculty position openings in San Francisco sit in Education and Healthcare & Medical Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. San Francisco's concentration of academic medical centers, research-focused universities, and professional schools in law, art, and technology drives consistent demand across those sectors throughout the academic hiring cycle.
