Instructor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a instructor in California?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 public schools, you must hold a California Teaching Credential issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which requires a bachelor's degree, a state-approved teacher preparation program, and passage of exams like the CSET and CalTPA. Community college instructors typically need a master's degree in the subject. Corporate and workforce training instructors are not licensed by a state board but often pursue credentials like the Certified Professional in Talent Development.
Which companies hire instructors in California?
Employers hiring instructors in California right now include San Francisco Unified School District, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and University of California Merced, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of large public school districts, University of California and California State University campuses, and major technology companies creates sustained demand for instructors across academic and professional settings year-round.
Which California cities have the most instructor jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Merced have the most instructor openings in California. Los Angeles drives the largest share through its vast K-12 district, community college network, and entertainment industry training programs, while San Francisco and San Diego draw demand from technology employers, biotech firms, and major research universities anchored in those metro areas.
Are there remote instructor jobs in California?
Yes, but they depend heavily on specialization. About 5% of instructor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the role's mix of in-person and online formats. Remote opportunities are most common in e-learning, corporate compliance training, and online academic programs, while hands-on technical, trades, and K-12 classroom positions remain almost entirely on-site.
How can I get hired as a instructor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is substituting or instructional assisting first. California school districts, including Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified, hire substitute teachers and instructional aides with a bachelor's degree and a valid 30-Day Substitute Permit from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Community colleges hire associate faculty for entry-level courses, and corporate training teams often bring in program coordinators or training specialists who transition into facilitation roles from adjacent positions in human resources or operations.
Where can I find and apply to instructor jobs in California?
You can find and apply to instructor jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your subject area, experience level, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
