Adjunct Faculty Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a adjunct faculty in California?
Most California community colleges require a master's degree in the discipline you plan to teach, awarded by a regionally accredited institution. For career technical education courses, relevant industry experience and an associate degree may qualify. The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office sets minimum qualifications by discipline, and hiring departments verify credentials before placement. Some institutions also require a brief teaching demonstration and completion of an equivalency review if your degree is in a related but not identical field.
Which companies hire adjunct facultys in California?
Employers hiring adjunct facultys in California right now include University of San Francisco, Saint Mary's College of California, and Touro University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large community college districts and multi-campus university systems account for the majority of adjunct positions, with hiring spread across dozens of campuses statewide.
Which California cities have the most adjunct faculty jobs?
Moraga, San Francisco, and Sacramento have the most adjunct faculty openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense concentration of community college campuses and private universities, while San Francisco draws demand from Bay Area colleges and tech-adjacent certificate programs, and San Diego's strong research university and military-affiliated education sector keeps adjunct rosters active year-round.
Are there remote adjunct faculty jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most teaching fields. About 8% of adjunct faculty openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the significant expansion of online course sections across California's community college and CSU systems. Fully remote positions are most common in writing, business, and general education courses, while lab-based and clinical instruction roles almost always require an on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a adjunct faculty in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to California community colleges, which hire new instructors with a qualifying master's degree even without prior classroom teaching. Many districts, including the Los Angeles Community College District and Foothill-De Anza Community College District, place new instructors in lower-division general education sections first. Completing a teaching practicum, gathering letters from supervisors in a related professional role, and earning a certificate in online instruction strengthens a new applicant's file considerably.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct faculty jobs in California?
You can find and apply to adjunct faculty jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across institutions and disciplines. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your qualifications and preferred location, and apply directly to each position.
