Adjunct Instructor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a adjunct instructor in California?
To become an adjunct instructor at a California community college, you typically need a master's degree in the subject you plan to teach or a related field, as required under California Education Code. For career-technical education courses, demonstrated professional experience in the field can substitute. Some districts issue a California Community College Instructor Credential through the county office of education. University of California and California State University campuses set their own minimum qualifications, usually a master's or terminal degree.
Which companies hire adjunct instructors in California?
Employers hiring adjunct instructors in California right now include Saint Mary's College of California, University of San Francisco, and Keck Graduate Institute, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's unusually large community college system, with over 70 independent districts, means adjunct openings are distributed broadly across the state rather than concentrated at a handful of institutions.
Which California cities have the most adjunct instructor jobs?
Moraga, San Francisco, and Claremont have the most adjunct instructor openings in California. Los Angeles leads because it hosts the largest community college district in the country alongside multiple CSU and UC campuses, while San Diego and the Bay Area follow due to their dense concentrations of higher education institutions, tech-driven continuing education demand, and large student enrollment bases.
Are there remote adjunct instructor jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 6% of adjunct instructor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the widespread adoption of online course delivery across California community colleges and CSU campuses. Courses in business, writing, and introductory computer science are most consistently offered in fully online formats, while lab sciences and performing arts remain primarily on-site.
How can I get hired as a adjunct instructor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to California community colleges, which regularly hire first-time instructors who meet minimum qualifications but lack classroom experience. Many districts accept graduate teaching assistantship experience as equivalent to college-level teaching. Applying to the Los Angeles Community College District, Foothill-De Anza Community College District, or San Diego Community College District's substitute or short-term instructor pools is a practical way to build a record. A completed master's degree in the subject area and a clear instructional philosophy statement give candidates a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct instructor jobs in California?
You can find and apply to adjunct instructor jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your subject area and availability, and apply directly to the institutions posting them.
