Elementary School Teacher Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a elementary school teacher in California?
To become an elementary school teacher in California, you must earn a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. This requires completing a bachelor's degree, finishing a California-approved teacher preparation program, passing the CSET Multiple Subjects exam, and completing student teaching. Most candidates also need a Certificate of Clearance through the Commission before entering a classroom.
How much do elementary school teachers make in California?

Which companies hire elementary school teachers in California?
Employers hiring elementary school teachers in California right now include San Francisco Unified School District, La Scuola International School, and Alpha Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large urban districts, charter management organizations such as KIPP SoCal, and county offices of education post openings throughout the school year, with the heaviest volume in spring ahead of the fall hiring cycle.
Which California cities have the most elementary school teacher jobs?
The California cities with the most elementary school teacher openings are San Francisco, San Jose, and Foster City. Los Angeles dominates the list because LAUSD is one of the largest public school districts in the country, while San Diego and Sacramento reflect the steady demand from their own large unified districts and the growing charter school networks serving both urban cores and surrounding suburban communities.
Are there remote elementary school teacher jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of elementary school teacher openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that the role is fundamentally classroom-based and requires in-person instruction. The small share of remote postings tends to cover virtual charter school programs and online tutoring or intervention support roles that operate under a California-authorized education provider.
How can I get hired as a elementary school teacher in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a California-approved intern credential program, which lets you teach in a classroom while finishing your credentialing requirements. Large California districts including Los Angeles Unified, Fresno Unified, and San Bernardino City Unified actively recruit through district intern programs designed for candidates who hold a bachelor's degree but have not yet completed a full preparation program. Applying as an instructional aide, paraeducator, or substitute teacher within a district is a common lateral move that builds classroom experience and gets you in front of principals who hire. Holding a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Certificate of Clearance and passing the CSET before applying gives candidates a clear advantage over those still in process.
