Faculty Position Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a faculty position in California?
Becoming a faculty member in California typically requires a terminal degree in your field, such as a Ph.D., M.F.A., or equivalent professional credential. For community college positions, the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office sets minimum qualifications by discipline, and some teaching areas require a California-specific credential or licensure. Candidates apply directly through the hiring institution and often undergo a multi-stage review including a teaching demonstration and committee interview.
Which companies hire faculty positions in California?
Employers hiring faculty positions in California right now include University of California, San Francisco and Gladstone Institutes, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of research universities, community college districts, and private professional schools means faculty hiring is distributed across both major metros and smaller regional campuses throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most faculty position jobs?
San Francisco and Fresno have the most faculty position openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its concentration of University of California and California State University campuses, community college districts, and private universities, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from major research institutions, medical schools, and a high density of technology and life sciences programs that require specialized instructors.
Are there remote faculty position jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 0% of faculty position openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting institutions that have expanded online program offerings. Online and distance education divisions of the California State University and University of California systems, along with private online colleges, account for most of the fully remote teaching roles.
How can I get hired as a faculty position in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is adjunct or part-time instruction at a California community college, which often hires candidates who meet minimum qualifications without prior full-time teaching experience. Large community college districts in Los Angeles, San Diego, and the Bay Area regularly post adjunct openings. A completed master's degree in the teaching discipline, a strong portfolio or practitioner background in applied fields, and volunteer or guest lecture experience at California institutions all strengthen an application considerably.
