General Summary of Position:
The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank, tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics beginning in September 2027.
We seek an innovative scholar conducting high-impact research in nuclear science, broadly defined. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally funded research program that strengthens and complements current research in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics and fosters collaboration across the university, including in interdisciplinary research. Preference will be given to candidates whose research programs will make substantive use of UMass Lowell’s nuclear and radiation research facilities, whether independently or in collaboration with existing programs across the university.
UMass Lowell’s Radiation Laboratory provides substantial infrastructure for nuclear research, including a 1-MW research reactor, 5.5-MV Van de Graaff accelerator, a dedicated radiochemistry laboratory, and facilities for radiation measurement and gamma and neutron irradiation. These facilities also offer opportunities for hands-on undergraduate and graduate research and training. Candidates should describe how their proposed research and educational activities would draw on these resources, where relevant, and how their work would advance the department’s broader research and educational goals.
UMass Lowell has longstanding strengths and growing programs in nuclear science and applied physics. The Department of Physics and Applied Physics, within the Kennedy College of Sciences, offers undergraduate degrees in Physics and Engineering Physics, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics with options in Radiological Sciences (ABET-accredited) and Medical Physics (CAMPEP-accredited).
Our faculty conduct experimental, computational, and theoretical research across fundamental and applied physics, including nuclear physics, radiation detection and measurement, radiological health physics, medical physics, materials and condensed matter physics, optics and photonics, quantum information, space science, and astrophysics. The department also offers opportunities to develop or expand research in nuclear chemistry. Research groups collaborate across the department and the university, including with Nuclear Engineering, as well as with national laboratories, research hospitals, industry, government agencies, and other academic institutions. The department has a strong record of externally funded research and provides students with opportunities to participate directly in faculty research through close mentoring and hands-on training.

Faculty Position Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a faculty position in Massachusetts?
Most faculty positions in Massachusetts require a terminal degree in the field you plan to teach, typically a PhD, EdD, MFA, or equivalent professional doctorate. Candidates applying to clinical or professional programs in health sciences may also need an active Massachusetts professional license in the relevant field. Strong applicants pair their credentials with a teaching portfolio, research experience, and letters from academic references familiar with their scholarly work.
Which companies hire faculty positions in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring faculty positions in Massachusetts right now include Boston University, William James College, and Umass Lowell, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Massachusetts's density of research universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges makes it one of the most consistently active faculty hiring markets in the country.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most faculty position jobs?
Boston, Newton, and Lowell have the most faculty position openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge drive the highest volume because of the concentration of major research universities, teaching hospitals, and professional schools located there, while Worcester's cluster of colleges and medical institutions supports a steady secondary market for academic hiring.
How can I get hired as a faculty position in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an adjunct or visiting instructor appointment, which Massachusetts community colleges and continuing education divisions at larger universities use regularly to bring in candidates who are ABD or newly credentialed. Institutions such as Bunker Hill Community College, Quinsigamond Community College, and the UMass extension schools frequently post part-time adjunct roles open to candidates without a full publication record. Teaching assistantships at Massachusetts graduate programs also count as classroom experience. A strong teaching statement and a willingness to take on high-need courses like composition, introductory math, or general education science significantly improves an entry-level applicant's chances.
Where can I find and apply to faculty position jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to faculty position jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and teaching area, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
