Tips for Your Study Abroad Advisor Job Search
Tailor your resume for each institution type
University advising offices and third-party program providers look for different strengths. Emphasize SEVIS record management and transcript evaluation for campus roles, and shift to recruitment metrics and partner relationship management when applying to private program organizations.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists study abroad advisor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight your own study abroad experience strategically
Don't just list a semester abroad as background. Describe how it shaped your advising approach, your fluency with host-country credit systems, or your ability to counsel students through pre-departure anxiety. Hiring committees treat lived experience as credibility, not decoration.
Target postings that match your credit evaluation skills
Many study abroad advisor roles require hands-on credit transfer evaluation and transcript articulation. If you have experience with a specific credit evaluation framework or student information system, name it explicitly in your cover letter to stand out against candidates with only general advising backgrounds.
Prepare a real advising scenario for interviews
Interviewers commonly present a case involving a student whose program is disrupted mid-term, a credit transfer dispute, or a crisis abroad. Walk in with a concrete example from your own experience that shows your decision-making process and how you kept the student informed throughout.
Negotiate around professional development funding
Study abroad offices frequently have more flexibility on conference travel, language training stipends, and international site visit budgets than on base salary. After receiving an offer, ask specifically about funding for NAFSA membership and regional conference attendance before accepting.
Study Abroad Advisor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most study abroad advisors?
CIEE, Principia, and Boston University are hiring the most study abroad advisors right now, with openings concentrated in Illinois, Utah, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Demand tends to be strongest at research universities and organizations that manage semester and faculty-led programs.
How many study abroad advisor jobs are remote?
About 50% of study abroad advisor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of July 2026, though many campus-based roles require in-person student appointments and orientation events. Sub-areas like program marketing, partner communications, and compliance reporting are most commonly offered on a hybrid or fully remote basis.
How do you become a study abroad advisor?
Start with a bachelor's degree in international education, higher education administration, or a related field, then gain direct student services experience through advising, residence life, or orientation roles. Completing your own study abroad program strengthens your credibility with students. Building familiarity with credit transfer processes, SEVIS, and NAFSA professional standards positions you well for your first full advising role.
How do you get hired as a study abroad advisor with little experience?
Entry-level roles often accept candidates who have worked as peer advisors, international student orientation leaders, or program assistants, even without formal professional advising titles. Emphasize any experience managing student inquiries, coordinating logistics for group travel, or evaluating academic documentation. A strong cover letter explaining why international education specifically draws you is weighted heavily at the screening stage.
What does the study abroad advisor interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include a phone or video screen focused on your advising philosophy and international education background, followed by an in-person or virtual panel interview with staff from advising, registrar, and student affairs teams. Many offices include a short scenario exercise asking how you would handle a student crisis or credit dispute. Reference checks with former supervisors or faculty mentors typically close the process.
