Tips for Your Research Assistant Professor Job Search
Tailor your CV to grant history
Hiring committees for research assistant professor roles weigh your funding record heavily. List every grant you've contributed to, your role on each, and the funding amount. A CV that buries this information beneath publications will lose to one that leads with it.
Align your research statement to departmental priorities
Read each department's active lab pages and recent publications before writing your statement. Show explicitly how your research agenda complements existing faculty work rather than duplicating it. Generic statements that could apply anywhere are the fastest way to get screened out.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists research assistant professor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Request recommendation letters from collaborators
For research assistant professor applications, letters from researchers outside your home institution carry more weight than those from your direct supervisor. Ask collaborators at other universities or institutes who can speak to your independence as a scientist or scholar.
Prepare a chalk talk for your job interview
Many research-intensive departments ask finalists to deliver a chalk talk, an informal presentation of your future research plans without slides. Practice explaining your five-year research trajectory out loud, anticipating methodological questions and funding strategy challenges from faculty.
Negotiate startup package before signing
Research assistant professor offers often include negotiable startup funds for equipment, personnel, or pilot studies. Know what your first experiments require and ask for it in writing during the offer stage. Departments expect negotiation here and rarely rescind offers because of it.
Research Assistant Professor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most research assistant professors?
The companies hiring the most research assistant professors right now include University of Florida, Texas A&M University, and University of Kentucky, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Research universities and academic medical centers consistently account for the majority of postings.
How many research assistant professor jobs are remote?
About 2% of research assistant professor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though most positions require on-site presence for lab work, clinical research, or departmental responsibilities. Roles in computational research, data science, epidemiology, and qualitative social sciences are most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a research assistant professor?
Becoming a research assistant professor typically requires completing a doctoral degree, followed by postdoctoral training to build an independent publication record and establish a research focus. From there, you apply to open positions at universities or research institutes, submitting a CV, research statement, and teaching statement. Strong letters of recommendation and evidence of grant competitiveness are essential at every stage.
Can you get hired as a research assistant professor with little experience?
Getting hired as a research assistant professor with limited experience is difficult but possible if you have a recently completed doctorate, at least a few first-author publications, and a clear research agenda. Some institutions prioritize early-career candidates who bring a fresh research direction that complements existing faculty. Postdoctoral experience is not always required, but it strengthens applications significantly at research-intensive departments.
What does the research assistant professor interview process look like?
The research assistant professor interview process typically begins with a phone or video screen with a search committee, followed by an on-campus visit lasting one to two days. During the campus visit, candidates deliver a formal research seminar, meet individually with faculty and department leadership, and may give a chalk talk outlining future research plans. Final candidates are evaluated on fit with departmental goals, funding potential, and collegiality.
Where can I find and apply to research assistant professor jobs?
You can find and apply to research assistant professor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from universities, research institutes, and academic medical centers across the United States. Find roles that match your research focus and experience level, then apply directly to each listing.
