Elementary Teacher Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a elementary teacher in Texas?
To become an elementary teacher in Texas, you must earn a bachelor's degree and complete a Texas Education Agency-approved educator preparation program, which can be university-based or an alternative certification program. You then must pass the appropriate Texas Examinations of Educator Standards tests for your grade level and subject area before applying for your standard Texas educator certificate through the TEA certification portal.
How much do elementary teachers make in Texas?
Elementary teachers in Texas earn a median of about $62,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,500 for the lowest 10% to over $73,570 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire elementary teachers in Texas?
Employers hiring elementary teachers in Texas right now include Spring Independent School District, Austin Independent School District, and ALDINE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's size and the scale of its urban school districts mean hiring stays active throughout the year, with particularly strong volume in districts serving rapidly growing suburban communities around Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.
Which Texas cities have the most elementary teacher jobs?
Houston, Austin, and San Antonio have the most elementary teacher openings in Texas right now. Houston and Dallas lead because their independent school districts are among the largest in the country by enrollment, while San Antonio's growth and its concentration of charter networks drive steady hiring that keeps it competitive with the larger metros.
Are there remote elementary teacher jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of elementary teacher openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how hands-on classroom instruction is by nature. The portions of the role most likely to appear in a remote or hybrid format are virtual academy positions run by Texas-based online charter schools.
How can I get hired as a elementary teacher in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an alternative certification program, which Texas allows through providers like school district-based programs and TEA-approved alternative prep organizations, letting you teach while you complete credentialing requirements. Large Texas districts including Houston ISD and Dallas ISD run residency and apprenticeship programs designed for candidates without prior classroom experience. Holding a paraprofessional or teacher aide role in a Texas district is another common entry point that frequently leads to a teaching position once certification is complete.
