Elementary Teacher Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a elementary teacher in California?
To become an elementary teacher in California, you must earn a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. This requires completing a state-approved teacher preparation program, passing the California Subject Examinations for Teachers, and completing the California Teaching Performance Assessment. Most programs are paired with a bachelor's or master's degree, and all candidates must clear a background check before the credential is issued.
How much do elementary teachers make in California?
Elementary teachers in California earn a median of about $99,650 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,940 for the lowest 10% to over $127,070 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire elementary teachers in California?
Employers hiring elementary teachers in California right now include San Francisco Unified School District, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and La Scuola International School, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and diversity of public, charter, and private school sectors means openings appear year-round, with particularly high volume during spring hiring season as districts plan for the following school year.
Which California cities have the most elementary teacher jobs?
San Francisco, Irvine, and San Jose consistently post the most elementary teacher openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by sheer volume given the size of its unified district, while San Diego and Bay Area cities reflect strong district growth and ongoing credential shortages that have kept hiring pipelines open even outside traditional hiring seasons.
Are there remote elementary teacher jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of elementary teacher openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how deeply in-person the role is by nature. The portions of the work most likely to shift remote are instructional coaching, curriculum development, and some special education support roles that do not require daily classroom presence.
How can I get hired as a elementary teacher in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a student teaching placement embedded in a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved preparation program, which gives you classroom hours and a direct connection to district hiring coordinators. Large California districts including Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified run intern credential programs that let you teach while completing your preparation. Paraprofessional or instructional aide roles within those districts are another proven door, as internal candidates with classroom experience move into credentialed positions regularly.
Where can I find and apply to elementary teacher jobs in California?
You can find and apply to elementary teacher jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from school districts, charter networks, and private schools across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your credential, grade level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
