Teaching Assistant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a teaching assistant in Texas?
To become a teaching assistant in Texas, you must meet the Texas Education Agency paraprofessional requirements, which include a high school diploma and either college credit hours or a passing score on an approved paraprofessional exam such as the ParaPro assessment. Public school districts require this credential before hiring. Some districts also require a background check clearance through the Texas Department of Public Safety before you can work directly with students.
Which companies hire teaching assistants in Texas?
Employers hiring teaching assistants in Texas right now include IDEA Public Schools, Texas A&M University, and Sam Houston State University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban school districts and public university systems are among the most consistent sources of teaching assistant openings in the state throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most teaching assistant jobs?
San Antonio, Houston, and College Station have the most teaching assistant openings in Texas, driven by the concentration of large independent school districts and public universities in each metro. Smaller surrounding suburban districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas also contribute significantly to the overall volume, as rapid population growth in those regions continues to expand enrollment and classroom staffing needs.
Are there remote teaching assistant jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 1% of teaching assistant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how hands-on and classroom-based the role typically is. The remote opportunities that do exist are most common in virtual charter schools and online tutoring programs operating within Texas.
How can I get hired as a teaching assistant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to a large Texas independent school district as a classroom aide or paraprofessional trainee, since many districts hire candidates without prior classroom experience if they meet the TEA education requirement. Houston ISD, Dallas ISD, and Austin ISD regularly post entry-level paraprofessional roles and provide on-the-job training. Volunteering in a school or completing a Texas community college education course can also strengthen an application when experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to teaching assistant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to teaching assistant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your qualifications and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
