Library Media Specialist Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a library media specialist in Maryland?
To become a library media specialist in Maryland, you must earn a Maryland State Department of Education Professional Certificate in Library Media, which requires a master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in library science or a related field and completion of state-approved coursework in library media education. Candidates also need a passing score on the relevant Praxis content exam. The Maryland State Department of Education issues and renews this certification, and most public school districts require it before hiring.
How much do library media specialists make in Maryland?
Library media specialists in Maryland earn a median of about $88,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,380 for the lowest 10% to over $123,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire library media specialists in Maryland?
Employers hiring library media specialists in Maryland right now include Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Baltimore City Public Schools, and Frederick County Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Maryland's large public school systems, particularly in Montgomery, Prince George's, and Baltimore counties, drive the majority of consistent openings across the state.
Which Maryland cities have the most library media specialist jobs?
Pasadena, Annapolis, and Baltimore have the most library media specialist openings in Maryland. The concentration in these areas reflects the scale of the surrounding public school systems and, in the case of College Park and Baltimore, the presence of major universities and branch campuses that maintain their own library and instructional media staff.
Are there remote library media specialist jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they're rare. Library media specialists are primarily on-site roles tied to school buildings, academic libraries, and physical collections, which limits remote opportunities significantly. About 0% of library media specialist openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, and those positions tend to involve instructional design, digital curriculum development, or district-level technology coordination rather than building-based library work.
How can I get hired as a library media specialist in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a practicum or student teaching placement embedded in your master's program at a Maryland school district, which frequently leads to substitute or provisional positions. Large systems like Montgomery County Public Schools and Baltimore County Public Schools regularly bring on library assistants and instructional technology aides, which are lateral roles that build qualifying experience. Holding a valid Maryland teaching certificate in any subject alongside your library science coursework gives you a competitive edge, as many districts will consider candidates provisionally certified while they complete remaining requirements.
Where can I find and apply to library media specialist jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to library media specialist jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings from school districts, academic institutions, and other employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and certification level and apply directly to the ones that match.
