The School of Education and Human Development (EHD) at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Administration and Supervision in the Department of Education Leadership, Foundations, and Policy . The program is top-ranked nationally and seeks an exceptional scholar whose work bridges theory, research, and practice in the service of preparing a new generation of leaders capable of cultivating school and system transformation.

Duties and responsibilities include collaborating on the design and delivery of core licensure courses and advanced leadership courses for the M.Ed. and Ed.D. degree programs. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to have a clear line of research in education leadership and school improvement, have a strong publication record, show evidence of EdD or PhD mentorship experiences, and show evidence of efforts and success generating external funding for scholarship.

The A&S program seeks a faculty member whose research centers on the preparation of educational leaders, the growth and development of current leaders, and/or the effects of leadership in schools. Key areas of scholarship may include opportunity and access, leadership in the early grades (PK-3), adult growth and development, organizational learning and continuous improvement, systems change, and leadership for and with specialized student populations (e.g., multilingual learners, students with disabilities). We welcome scholars who take an interdisciplinary approach to educational leadership – for example, by integrating the study of leadership with health, psychology, management, public policy, or AI/data science. Assistant Professor applicants must show an emerging record of publications in education leadership whereas Associate Professor applicants must have an established record.

The School of Education and Human Development offers a rich intellectual and collaborative environment for researching the preparation, development, practice, and impact of educational leaders. Opportunities for collaboration, partnership, and research are available through the K-12 Advisory Council , a 125-district outreach initiative sponsored by EHD; as well as a range of partnerships with several K-12 Virginia school divisions and the Virginia Department of Education. Several well-established research centers at the School offer additional collaboration and research opportunities in educational policy ( EdPolicyWorks ), research on teaching and learning ( CASTL ), and adolescent development and well-being ( Youth-Nex ). The UVA Partnership for Leaders in Education ( UVA-PLE ), a joint venture of the UVA Darden School of Business and EHD, presents sustained professional learning for district-level leaders to implement systemic change. The School and University provide excellent infrastructure for research administration and federal and foundation grant preparation, and opportunities for formal involvement in leadership-related initiatives across the University, such as at the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and the Darden School of Business.

Duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to teaching, advising, mentoring and participation in program, departmental and school meetings are to be conducted primarily on-Grounds and in-person at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Earned doctorate in educational leadership or administration, or a related field,
• Work experience in PK12 Education,
• An existing national reputation or strong promise of national reputation for a line of research related to education leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two or more years of teaching experience in higher education using on-line and/or hybrid formats,
• The potential to secure extramural funding or a record of existing and sustained extramural funding,
• Demonstrated methodological expertise in qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods research,
• Experience working closely with school and district leaders in multi-year research-practice partnerships,
• Demonstrated interest in teaching methods courses in the EHD EdD programs (e.g., Introduction to Inquiry, Program Evaluation, Survey Inquiry for Practitioners),
• Evidence of past experiences mentoring students at any level (undergraduate or graduate),
• Scholarly expertise in any (or all) areas of: opportunity and access, leadership in the early grades (PK-3), adult growth and development, organizational learning and continuous improvement, systems change, and leadership for and with specialized student populations (e.g., multilingual learners, students with disabilities).
