Automation Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a automation job in Pittsburgh?
Focus your search on Pittsburgh's advanced manufacturing plants, robotics firms, and energy companies, which consistently post automation roles. The Strip District tech corridor, Oakland's engineering hubs, and suburban industrial parks in Cranberry Township and Bethel Park are where most openings concentrate. Candidates with PLC programming, SCADA experience, or hands-on robotics integration skills stand out in Pittsburgh's manufacturing-heavy market, and local community college programs in automation technology can sharpen those credentials quickly.
Which companies hire automations in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh automation roles are posted by PNC Financial Services, SMS group, and UPMC and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pittsburgh's hiring base includes legacy steel and manufacturing firms that have retooled around automation, alongside robotics startups and university-affiliated research operations tied to Carnegie Mellon and Pitt.
Are there remote automation jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though remote work depends heavily on the role: hands-on technician and field integration positions are almost always on-site, while automation engineering, systems design, and software-side roles often allow remote or hybrid arrangements. About 16% of automation openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, skewing toward engineering and analytics functions. Pittsburgh-based firms in software-driven automation and process control tend to offer the most scheduling flexibility.
How can I get a automation job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through an apprenticeship or technician role at one of the city's manufacturing or utilities employers, which regularly bring on candidates from CCAC's or Pittsburgh Technical College's automation and electronics programs. Entry-level controls technician and maintenance automation positions at food processing plants, packaging facilities, and energy infrastructure companies in the Greater Pittsburgh area are common first steps. A working knowledge of basic PLC ladder logic and willingness to work on-site gives candidates a clear edge locally.
