Entry Level Backend Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level backend engineer job?
Build a portfolio with two or three projects that demonstrate server-side work, such as a REST API, a database-backed app, or a small microservice. Proficiency in at least one backend language, like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with familiarity with SQL and version control, gives candidates a real edge. Internship experience helps, but self-taught candidates with deployed, public projects land these roles too.
Which companies hire entry level backend engineers?
Companies hiring entry level backend engineers right now include Rippling, CVS Health, and TikTok, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of technology startups, enterprise software firms, and companies in retail and finance that are growing their engineering teams.
Are there remote entry level backend engineer jobs?
Yes, though on-site and hybrid roles are still common at this stage. About 32% of entry level backend engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, so candidates who prefer flexibility will find real options without limiting their search to one geography.
Are these new grad backend engineer jobs?
Yes, listings on this page include new grad, recent graduate, and junior backend engineer roles. A new grad friendly posting typically welcomes zero to two years of experience, accepts internship work or academic projects as qualifying background, and does not require prior professional employment. If a role lists a portfolio or coursework as acceptable, it fits this category.
Which industries hire the most entry level backend engineers?
Entry Level backend engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Banking & Financial Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they are actively building or scaling software products and need engineers who can contribute to core backend systems from the start.
