Backend Java Developer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a backend java developer in Virginia?
Backend java developer is not a state-licensed profession in Virginia, so there is no Virginia board exam or registration required. Most employers hire candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, though a strong portfolio of Java projects or relevant certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional Java SE can substitute. Northern Virginia's dense federal contractor community also values candidates who can obtain a security clearance.
How much do backend java developers make in Virginia?
Backend java developers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire backend java developers in Virginia?
Employers hiring backend java developers in Virginia right now include Capital One, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, and SAIC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal IT contractors and large financial institutions means demand is distributed across both government-facing and commercial engineering teams throughout the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most backend java developer jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Ashburn have the most backend java developer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia anchors the market because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms along the Dulles Corridor, while Richmond draws steady demand from large financial services employers and state government IT programs, and Hampton Roads hiring is driven primarily by Navy and defense-sector contractors.
Are there remote backend java developer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 67% of backend java developer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how fully desk-based and tool-dependent this work is. Pure backend development tasks such as API design, code review, and database work transfer well to remote settings, though roles tied to classified federal contracts in Northern Virginia typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a backend java developer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for junior developer or associate software engineer roles at Virginia's large federal IT contractors, which regularly onboard new graduates through structured cohort programs. Employers like Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton run early-career associate programs specifically designed for candidates without professional experience. Building a visible portfolio of Java or Spring Boot projects on a code repository, earning an Oracle Java certification, and pursuing roles with titles like software engineering intern or application developer associate all strengthen an entry-level application in the Virginia market.
Where can I find and apply to backend java developer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to backend java developer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
