Entry Level Backend Software Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an entry level backend software engineer job?
Build a portfolio with two or three projects that show server-side logic, database design, and API development using languages like Python, Java, or Node.js. Employers at this level look for candidates who can demonstrate working code over years of experience, so open-source contributions, a capstone project, or a completed internship all strengthen your application. Bootcamp graduates and self-taught candidates are regularly considered.
Which companies hire entry level backend software engineers?
Companies hiring entry level backend software engineers right now include Rippling, CVS Health, and TikTok, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Startups, mid-size technology firms, and large enterprise employers all post at this level, often looking for candidates who can grow within an engineering team from their first day.
Are there remote entry level backend software engineer jobs?
Yes, though on-site roles still make up a significant share of postings at this level. About 32% of entry level backend software engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, so candidates who prefer flexibility will find options alongside in-person roles that offer hands-on mentorship from senior engineers.
Are these new grad backend software engineer jobs?
Yes, the listings here include new grad, recent graduate, and junior backend software engineer roles. A posting is new-grad friendly when it welcomes zero to two years of experience, counts internships or co-ops toward the requirement, or explicitly accepts a strong portfolio in place of full-time work history. Searching for junior or new grad titles surfaces these roles directly.
Which industries hire the most entry level backend software engineers?
Entry Level backend software engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Banking & Financial Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring at this level because they rely on scalable systems, data pipelines, and APIs that require consistent junior engineering talent to build and maintain alongside senior teams.
