INTRODUCTION
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for Chair of the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention. This leader will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the department. Successful candidates will be an accomplished clinician-scientist and proven leader. The Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention is part of the Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences and the Chair reports to the Division Head.
The Chair of Clinical Cancer Prevention will be charged with leading a nationally recognized department and contributing to the prevention and elimination of cancer, transformative research, and exceptional education.
The Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention is a nationally distinctive, multidisciplinary program focused on advancing cancer risk assessment, early detection, and prevention. Our team includes 10 faculty members (4 research and 6 clinical) and 17 advanced practice providers who deliver coordinated, evidence-based care across the Cancer Prevention Center and disease-specific oncology clinics. Services include cancer screening, genetic evaluation, personalized risk-reduction counseling and management of high-risk patients. Through strong collaboration across the institution, clinicians and researchers translate scientific discoveries into clinical practice, lead prevention-focused clinical trials and sustain a robust basic, translational and clinical research portfolio centered on early-detection biomarkers and effective risk-reduction strategies.
The Chair is responsible for providing leadership and assumes full responsibility for all areas of the department, including, but not limited to, direct patient care; basic, translational, and clinical research within the department; faculty development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; finance and budgeting; and departmental strategic planning that aligns with institutional direction. The Chair inspires professional growth by ensuring career development opportunities and mentorship for department faculty and trainees, as well as fostering a positive work environment that emphasizes collaboration, collegiality and wellness for all. The Chair will also represent the department, division and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 10 years of experience post clinical degree
- M.D. or equivalent degree
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine, an Internal Medicine subspecialty (e.g., Medical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Hematology), or Family Medicine.
- Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure
- Demonstration of clinical excellence and performance
- Administrative experience at a departmental or institutional level
- Proven track record of successful and independent clinical or translational research and grant or protocol funding
- Consistent record of contributions to education or training and to mentoring of trainees, faculty, or staff
- Progressive leadership experience in an academic setting, preferred experience in an oncologic setting
- Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter-disciplinary relationships
