Social Worker Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social worker in Texas?
To become a social worker in Texas, you must obtain a license through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners. A BSW degree qualifies you for the Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) credential, while an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program is required for the LMSW and the advanced LCSW, which requires supervised clinical hours and a licensing exam. Most Texas employers require at minimum an LMSW for clinical roles.
Which companies hire social workers in Texas?
Employers hiring social workers in Texas right now include LifeStance Health, MYCHN, and Thriveworks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Texas's large public systems, hospital networks, and county health authorities are among the most consistent sources of openings across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most social worker jobs?
San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas have the most social worker openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas concentrate the most volume because of their large hospital systems, county child welfare offices, and behavioral health networks, while San Antonio's substantial military-affiliated population and Veterans Affairs facilities drive steady demand for clinical and case management roles.
Are there remote social worker jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because much of the work involves in-person client contact, home visits, or court appearances. About 51% of social worker openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting a subset of roles where this arrangement is practical. Telehealth counseling and care coordination positions are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid schedules.
How can I get hired as a social worker in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a case aide, social work intern, or community health worker role while completing your degree or immediately after graduation. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services regularly hires new BSW and MSW graduates into structured entry-level positions with supervision and on-the-job training. Large Texas hospital systems such as UT Health and Texas Health Resources also bring on new-grad MSWs for medical social work roles. Holding your LBSW or LMSW at the time you apply gives you a clear edge over unlicensed candidates.
Where can I find and apply to social worker jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to social worker jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
