Social Worker Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social worker in New York?
To become a licensed social worker in New York, you must earn a Master of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York offers the LMSW for graduates who pass the ASWB Master's exam and the LCSW for those who complete supervised clinical hours and pass the Clinical exam. Both licenses require registration renewal every three years.
Which companies hire social workers in New York?
Employers hiring social workers in New York right now include Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, NYU Langone Health, and NYC Health + Hospitals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's size and density of hospital systems, city agencies, and nonprofit human services organizations means a wide range of employer types are hiring simultaneously, from large health networks to borough-based community organizations.
Which New York cities have the most social worker jobs?
The cities with the most social worker openings in New York are Brooklyn, New York, and Elmwood Ave. New York City dominates by volume because of its concentration of public agencies, hospital systems, and nonprofits, while Buffalo and Albany draw consistent demand from regional health systems, state government offices, and university-affiliated behavioral health programs that serve large surrounding populations.
Are there remote social worker jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 16% of social worker openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that much of the work involves in-person client contact, home visits, or hospital-based assessments. The roles most likely to offer remote or telehealth options are outpatient therapy, care coordination, and utilization review positions.
How can I get hired as a social worker in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a caseworker or social work associate position with the New York City Administration for Children's Services or the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, both of which regularly hire candidates who hold a BSW or are completing their MSW. Field placement internships at NYC Health + Hospitals or large nonprofits like Good Shepherd Services build the supervised hours many licensing tracks require and frequently lead to direct hire offers after graduation.
Where can I find and apply to social worker jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to social worker jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the listings to see roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
