Behavioral Health Therapist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health therapist in Texas?
You become a behavioral health therapist in Texas by earning a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field and then obtaining licensure through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors or the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners. Both boards require supervised post-graduate hours and a national licensing exam before a full license is granted. Many Texas employers will hire candidates at the associate or licensed professional counselor associate level while they complete their supervised hours.
Which companies hire behavioral health therapists in Texas?
Employers hiring behavioral health therapists in Texas right now include LifeStance Health, Eating Recovery Center, and Lone Star Circle of Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large public health infrastructure, VA medical centers, and expanding community mental health networks keep demand consistent year-round across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most behavioral health therapist jobs?
The cities with the most behavioral health therapist openings in Texas are Austin, Houston, and Dallas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive the largest share of postings because of their dense concentrations of hospital systems, community mental health centers, and VA facilities, while San Antonio's significant military and veteran population sustains steady demand for trauma-focused and behavioral health services.
Are there remote behavioral health therapist jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical roles, since telehealth-delivered therapy has become widely accepted in Texas following expanded state and federal rules for behavioral health services. About 23% of behavioral health therapist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting ongoing telehealth adoption. Individual therapy, psychiatric support services, and employee assistance program counseling are the sub-areas most commonly offered fully remote.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health therapist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for licensed professional counselor associate or licensed master social worker positions at Texas community mental health centers such as Integral Care in Austin or the Harris Center for Mental Health in Houston, which routinely hire candidates who are completing their supervised hours. Lateral moves from case management, psychiatric rehabilitation, or school counseling aide roles are also common. Holding an active Texas associate license and any coursework in trauma-informed care or substance use disorder treatment gives candidates a measurable edge at the application stage.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health therapist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to behavioral health therapist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across hospital systems, community mental health organizations, school districts, and telehealth providers. Find the roles that fit your license level and specialization and apply directly to each employer.
