City Attorney Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a city attorney in South Dakota?
To become a city attorney in South Dakota, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and pass the South Dakota Bar Examination, administered by the State Bar of South Dakota. After admission, candidates typically gain experience in government, civil litigation, or administrative law. Many South Dakota municipalities also require a license in good standing and may prefer experience with state-specific statutes before hiring for the city attorney role.
Which companies hire city attorneys in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring city attorneys in South Dakota include Monument Health, Sanford Health, and Target, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's municipal governments and county offices remain the most consistent source of city attorney openings, particularly in larger jurisdictions managing growing populations and infrastructure demands.
Which South Dakota cities have the most city attorney jobs?
Rapid City, South Dakota, and Pierre have the most city attorney openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of demand as the state's most populous city with an active municipal legal department, while Rapid City's role as the regional hub of western South Dakota and Aberdeen's position as a center for northeastern agriculture and commerce generate steady public-sector legal needs.
Are there remote city attorney jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. City attorney work is largely tied to in-person council meetings, court appearances, and on-site consultation with city departments. About 22% of city attorney openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those arrangements tend to apply to contract or part-time advisory roles rather than full-time in-house positions. Legal research and document drafting are the tasks most often handled off-site.
How can I get hired as a city attorney in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistant city attorney or associate counsel role with a South Dakota municipality, where full admission to the State Bar of South Dakota is typically required but years of municipal experience are not. Sioux Falls and Rapid City have hired new attorneys into support roles handling code enforcement and contract review. Lateral moves from public defender offices, county prosecutors, or state agency counsel positions are common stepping stones, and clerkship experience in South Dakota state courts strengthens any application.
Where can I find and apply to city attorney jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to city attorney jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current South Dakota openings. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your qualifications and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
