Civil Drafter Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil drafter in Texas?
The most direct path is completing an associate degree in drafting and design technology or civil engineering technology at a Texas community college, followed by entry-level work at a civil engineering or land development firm. Texas does not require a state license specifically for civil drafters, but earning AutoCAD certification and building familiarity with TxDOT standards strengthens your candidacy considerably. Many Texas employers also hire graduates of vocational drafting programs.
How much do civil drafters make in Texas?
Civil drafters in Texas earn a median of about $63,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $44,950 for the lowest 10% to over $100,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil drafters in Texas?
Employers hiring civil drafters in Texas right now include Magrym Consulting and Miller Legg & Associates, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large infrastructure pipeline and active land development market mean established engineering and surveying firms post consistently across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most civil drafter jobs?
San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso have the most civil drafter openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its concentration of engineering firms tied to energy infrastructure and port-related development, while Dallas and Austin reflect strong land development and transportation corridor work driven by continued regional population growth.
Are there remote civil drafter jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles, since civil drafters often need to coordinate directly with field surveyors and project engineers. About 0% of civil drafter openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with fully remote positions most often found in plan production and CAD support roles that don't require regular site visits.
How can I get hired as a civil drafter in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an internship or drafter-technician role at a Texas civil engineering or land surveying firm while completing or just after finishing a community college drafting program. Firms like Kimley-Horn and Jacobs Engineering regularly bring on junior CAD technicians from Texas community colleges such as Houston Community College and Austin Community College. A portfolio of class projects drawn in AutoCAD Civil 3D and demonstrated familiarity with TxDOT plan standards give entry-level candidates a clear edge over those with no coursework samples.
