Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code / Configuration as Code (IaC/CaC) for platform components.
Support air-gapped/disconnected environment management and license management tooling.
Deliver CI/CD pipelines, automation, and operational support enabling telemetry, inventory management, and centralized access services as the platform matures.

Cloud Platform Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cloud platform engineer in Virginia?
Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or engineering, combined with hands-on cloud certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure Administrator, or Google Professional Cloud Architect. Virginia has no state-issued license specific to cloud engineering, but the concentration of defense and federal contractors means a DoD security clearance is frequently a practical requirement for a large share of available roles. Building experience through cloud lab environments, open-source contributions, or adjacent IT roles strengthens your candidacy.
How much do cloud platform engineers make in Virginia?
Cloud platform engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cloud platform engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring cloud platform engineers in Virginia right now include Accenture Federal Services, Genworth, and MTSI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's dense cluster of federal systems integrators and hyperscaler regional headquarters makes it one of the more consistently active hiring markets for this role in the country.
Which Virginia cities have the most cloud platform engineer jobs?
Springfield, McLean, and Reston account for the largest share of cloud platform engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia drives the bulk of demand because it hosts the world's largest concentration of data centers alongside major federal agency offices and defense contractor campuses, while Richmond and Hampton Roads add volume through state government IT modernization programs and military installation support contracts.
Are there remote cloud platform engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields, because cloud platform work is inherently infrastructure-focused and executable entirely through remote tooling. About 80% of cloud platform engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly the role lends itself to distributed teams. The most consistently remote portions of the work involve platform design, automation scripting, and monitoring, while roles requiring access to classified networks or on-premises hardware are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a cloud platform engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a systems administrator, IT support, or network operations role into cloud work by earning an associate-level certification such as AWS Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals while in your current position. Large Virginia employers like SAIC, General Dynamics IT, and Perspecta regularly run new-associate or early-career technology programs that accept candidates without dedicated cloud titles. Building a portfolio of deployed cloud projects on a personal or lab account and targeting junior platform operations or cloud support analyst openings gives you a foothold to move into full platform engineering.
Where can I find and apply to cloud platform engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to cloud platform engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
