Civil Engineer, Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering
Advanced Infrastructure Design, Inc. (AID) is looking to hire a full-time, entry level geotechnical/pavement engineer to provide geotechnical and pavement engineering field and design services throughout New Jersey, the Philadelphia and surrounding area, in addition to occasionally other states and locations.
The work for this role includes inspection of borings and test pits, pavement coring and subgrade sampling, and related field and laboratory testing to define subsurface conditions including characterizing soil profiles and soil parameters for design of foundations, retaining structures, stormwater infiltration, and characterizing condition of pavement and pavement subgrades for design of pavement construction and rehabilitation. These types of inspection and testing experience are essential to developing a career in geotechnical engineering and pavement engineering. Candidates will be involved in a variety of projects including subsurface investigations for foundations, retaining structures, and evaluation and rehabilitation design of pavements. The responsibilities of this role include:
- Performing geotechnical boring and test pit inspections, including collecting and logging soil and rock samples for laboratory testing.
- Supervising pavement coring and performing soil field testing, including collecting pavement and subgrade samples for laboratory testing.
- Characterizing geotechnical subsurface conditions under the guidance of the geotechnical lead using the data collected from borings, test pits, field testing, and laboratory testing.
- Characterizing pavement and subgrade conditions under the guidance of the pavement lead using the data collected from pavement cores, subgrade sampling, and laboratory testing.
- Preparing boring, test pit, and pavement core location plans to AID standards using CAD base files and mapping tools such as Google Earth.
- Preparing daily field reports and maintaining project documentation.
- Performing hand and software-based geotechnical analyses which may include lateral earth pressure, stability, bearing, and settlement of geotechnical structures including piles and drilled shafts.
- Preparing technical memoranda documenting analysis methods and providing analysis results.
- Adhering to safety requirements including OSHA excavation safety standards and proper use of PPE.
- Participating in pavement field investigations, including visual condition surveys and distress identification.
- Supporting pavement evaluation and rehabilitation design, including review of pavement structure, materials, and drainage conditions.
- Assisting in preparing pavement design inputs and calculations following FAA and AASHTO guidelines.
- Performing pavement-related laboratory and field testing for asphalt, concrete, and subgrade materials including coring, DCP testing, and collection of direct push samples.
- Contributing to forensic investigations of pavement failures and assisting with report preparation.
- Supporting the development of pavement maintenance and pavement rehabilitation strategies.
- Assisting in NDT-related pavement investigations as part of interdisciplinary projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with an academic focus in both geotechnical engineering and pavement engineering.
- Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a strong emphasis in geotechnical engineering and/or pavement engineering is preferred.
- 0–3 years of relevant experience.
- EIT or Engineering Intern certification preferred.
- Ability to work across disciplines including geotechnical, pavement, materials testing, and NDT with appropriate training.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; working knowledge of AutoCAD and Adobe.
- Ability to commute reliably to Hamilton, NJ office.
- Valid driver’s license meeting AID insurance requirements.
