How the TN visa works

TN is for citizens of Canada and Mexico working in one of the professions on the USMCA list. There is no cap, no lottery, and no petition for most applicants. With a job offer and an employer support letter, Canadian citizens are visa-exempt and present their documents at a U.S. port of entry, receiving status the same day; Mexican citizens apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate first. The exception is someone already in the U.S. who changes to or extends TN status, where the employer files Form I-129 with USCIS. What matters is that your degree or credentials match a listed profession and that the offer is for a role on that list. TN does not allow dual intent, so you cannot use it to pursue a green card. TN is granted for up to three years and renews indefinitely.
