JOB SUMMARY:
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
CSIS is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator and Research Assistant to join the Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) to contribute to PONI’s mission of developing the next generation of nuclear experts and leading cutting-edge research on a range of nuclear issues. The PCRA will primarily be responsible for assisting with managing PONI’s programming and conducting research and writing and will play a key role in advancing PONI’s initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience developing, planning, and executing programmatic activities (e.g. private and public conferences, workshops, simulations/table top exercises, etc.), an exceptional ability to write and carry out original research with guidance from senior staff, and superior communication skills. Candidates with interest in and/or experience with managing budgets, as well as research on arms control, nonproliferation, and the intersection of emerging technologies and nuclear issues are preferred. The candidate reports to Heather Williams, Director, Project on Nuclear Issues and Senior Fellow, Defense and Security Department.
The salary range for this position is between $55,000 and $65,000. Final salary is competitive and based on candidate’s qualifications and skillset.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Program Management (50%):
- Organizes and coordinates logistics for program events including meetings, briefings, roundtables, dialogues, international exchanges and major conferences;
- Assists in conceptualizing new project ideas;
- Assists with maintaining and updating PONI websites and communications;
- Assists in outreach and recruitment for participation in PONI programs;
- Assists with day-to-day monitoring and managing elements of the program budget;
- Other administrative and research tasks as needed.
Research (50%):
- Supports the program’s research agenda through research and writing, particularly on nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction issues;
- Monitors relevant nuclear trends and developments for how they impact program interest areas;
- Assists with layout, editing, dissemination, and promotion of publications;
- Contributes to broader WMD and national security research efforts as part of the Senior Adviser’s portfolio;
- Provides research support on a range of nuclear weapons-related issues including arms control, nonproliferation, evolving deterrence dynamics, and the intersection of emerging technology on nuclear issues.
