Summary
This position requires you understand the importance of proper animal care and welfare. This role is crucial in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the vivarium to successfully execute all of the various ongoing projects.
Responsibilities
- Provides care to all animals in the vivarium.
- Receives animals from suppliers, identifies animals as instructed, and issues selected animal species to researchers.
- Prepares special diets in accordance with the Study Director’s protocols and administers these diets to the appropriate animals.
- Administers treatments or medications according to the veterinarian’s orders.
- Acclimates animals for placement in experimental studies.
- Assists in general record-keeping as well as specialized monitoring and surveillance programs.
- Maintains inventory of vivarium supplies.
- Maintains inventory of consumables area.
- Provides food and water to animals as outlined by standard operating procedures or supervisor’s instructions.
- Observes and reports changes in the health status or condition of animals.
- Requires a positive approach and willingness to accept new projects as required.
- Performs daily cleaning and upkeep of Vivarium areas to provide a clean and low stress environment for the animals.
- Performs daily health checks to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of animal cages, rooms, halls, etc.
- Sterilizes equipment and facilities (room fogging and autoclaving surgical materials).
- Assists in maintaining calibration records for vivarium equipment.
- Assists with sample management.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year of husbandry experience
Preferred Requirements
- ALAT certification preferred
