Tailor your research background to FIU's focus areas
FIU's research programs concentrate on areas like coastal sustainability, biomedical sciences, and urban policy. Aligning your CV to the specific lab or center you're targeting signals you've done the work, not just submitted a blanket application.
Connect directly with faculty hiring for funded projects
Research Intern roles at universities often fill through faculty networks before formal postings close. Reach out to FIU professors running grant-funded projects in your field. A direct expression of interest tied to their published research carries real weight.
Understand how FIU structures H-1B sponsorship transitions
If you're targeting H-1B sponsorship after an internship, FIU typically processes petitions through its international HR office. Filing happens well ahead of the October 1 start date, so you'll need an offer confirmed months before the USCIS cap registration window opens in March.
Browse open Research Intern roles using Migrate Mate

Find Research Intern at Florida International University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Florida International University sponsor H-1B visas for Research Interns?
Yes, FIU does sponsor H-1B visas for Research Intern roles, particularly where the position requires a specialty occupation and the candidate holds a qualifying degree. Sponsorship typically applies to positions that transition from internship to a more permanent research role. The university processes petitions through its international HR team, and you'll want an offer in place well before the USCIS cap registration window opens each spring.
How do I apply for Research Intern jobs at Florida International University?
Applications go through FIU's careers portal, but many Research Intern positions are also filled through direct faculty outreach, especially for lab-based or grant-funded roles. Review active department research pages alongside the job board. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Research Intern listings at FIU filtered by visa sponsorship type, which helps you prioritize roles that match your current authorization status.
Which visa types are commonly used for Research Intern roles at Florida International University?
F-1 CPT and F-1 OPT are the most common pathways for Research Intern roles at FIU, since many positions are designed around student researchers still completing their degrees or in their post-completion work authorization window. For candidates seeking longer-term authorization, FIU also has a track record of sponsoring H-1B, TN, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for qualifying research roles.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Research Intern positions at FIU?
Expectations vary by department, but most Research Intern roles at FIU require enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate or undergraduate program. Labs and research centers typically look for demonstrated experience with methodology specific to their field, whether that's data analysis, laboratory techniques, fieldwork, or policy research. Strong academic standing and prior research exposure, even from coursework projects, meaningfully strengthen your application.
How do I time my application around visa authorization deadlines at FIU?
If you're on F-1 CPT, your authorization must be in place before your start date, which means coordinating with your DSO weeks in advance. For OPT, make sure your remaining authorization window covers the full internship period. If you're targeting an H-1B transition, the annual USCIS cap registration opens in March for an October 1 start, so securing an offer by late winter gives FIU's HR team enough lead time to file.
