Credential your degree for U.S. equivalency early
If your terminal degree is from a non-U.S. institution, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying. FIU's HR office will reference this when assessing your qualifications for H-1B specialty occupation classification.
Target open-rank searches strategically
FIU posts Assistant Professor openings across colleges year-round, not just in fall cycles. Filter by department and check whether the position lists visa sponsorship explicitly, since sponsored hires typically require an approved departmental budget line.
Browse verified FIU Assistant Professor openings on Migrate Mate
Search for Assistant Professor roles at FIU on Migrate Mate to filter specifically for positions open to visa sponsorship. This saves time compared to manually parsing FIU's jobs portal for sponsorship eligibility.
Request cap-exempt H-1B filing timing from your department
As a university, FIU qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning USCIS can process your petition any time of year without waiting for the April lottery. Confirm this with your hiring department so you can negotiate a start date that works.

Find Assistant Professor at Florida International University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Florida International University sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Professors?
Yes. FIU sponsors H-1B visas for Assistant Professors, and as a qualifying higher education institution it files as a cap-exempt employer. That means your H-1B petition can be submitted to USCIS at any point in the year, bypassing the annual lottery that applies to private-sector employers. Your department will typically coordinate with FIU's Office of Human Resources to initiate the filing once you have a signed offer.
How do I apply for Assistant Professor jobs at Florida International University?
Applications go through FIU's official careers portal at careers.fiu.edu, where faculty positions are listed by college and department. Most Assistant Professor searches require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, and contact information for references. You can also browse FIU Assistant Professor openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly through FIU's portal.
Which visa types does FIU commonly use for Assistant Professor roles?
FIU sponsors H-1B visas for most international Assistant Professors, since the role clearly meets the specialty occupation standard. For faculty completing U.S. doctoral programs, F-1 OPT or CPT can bridge the gap before the H-1B is approved. Canadian and Mexican nationals may use the TN visa for eligible disciplines. Faculty seeking permanent residency can pursue EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship through PERM labor certification filed with DOL.
What qualifications does FIU expect for Assistant Professor positions?
The standard minimum is a terminal degree in the relevant field, typically a Ph.D., though professional degrees such as an M.F.A. or J.D. qualify for specific disciplines. Most searches also expect a demonstrable research agenda, peer-reviewed publications, and prior teaching experience. Some departments at FIU, particularly in STEM and business, place additional weight on grant funding history or industry partnerships relevant to the college's strategic priorities.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a new FIU Assistant Professor?
For H-1B filings, cap-exempt petitions at universities like FIU are typically processed by USCIS in two to four months under regular processing, or two to three weeks with premium processing. If you're pursuing a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM stage alone with DOL generally runs 12 to 18 months before FIU can file the I-140 petition, so planning well ahead of any contract renewal is important.
