Align Your Credentials to Emory's Departmental Needs
Emory hires Assistant Professors at the departmental level, so tailor your research statement and CV to the specific school, whether it's Emory College, the School of Medicine, or Rollins School of Public Health. A misaligned application rarely advances to sponsorship conversations.
Understand the PERM Timeline for Tenure-Track Roles
Many Assistant Professor hires at research universities lead to EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM. DOL's PERM process can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS even receives your petition, so start that conversation with HR early in your appointment.
Confirm Emory's J-1 Waiver Policy Before Applying
If you're currently on a J-1 exchange visitor visa with a two-year home residency requirement, confirm whether Emory's international faculty office supports Conrad State 30 or interested government agency waivers before accepting any offer, since unresolved J-1 obligations block H-1B transfer.
Use Migrate Mate to Target Open Faculty Positions
Faculty job cycles at Emory open on a rolling basis across dozens of departments. Use Migrate Mate to filter Assistant Professor openings by sponsorship type so you're only pursuing roles where your visa situation is already a fit.
Request Your H-1B Start Date Around the Academic Calendar
Emory structures faculty appointments around semester start dates. When your offer letter is drafted, work with the hiring department to time your H-1B petition so your USCIS approval aligns with your contract start date, avoiding a gap in authorized employment.
Document the Specialty Occupation Nexus in Your Application Materials
USCIS requires Assistant Professor petitions to establish specialty occupation status. Your cover letter and department's support letter should explicitly connect your terminal degree field to the specific courses you'll teach or research you'll conduct, not just list job duties generically.

Find Assistant Professor at Emory University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Emory University sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Professors?
Yes, Emory University sponsors H-1B visas for Assistant Professors across its schools and departments. Emory's international faculty support infrastructure handles H-1B petitions through its central HR and legal teams. Faculty hires in medicine, public health, arts and sciences, and law regularly receive H-1B sponsorship, and Emory also supports cap-exempt filings for faculty moving between qualifying academic institutions.
How do I apply for Assistant Professor jobs at Emory University?
Applications for Assistant Professor roles at Emory are submitted through Emory's faculty recruitment system, which is department-driven. Each opening has its own application portal with specific materials requested, typically a CV, cover letter, research and teaching statements, and references. You can find open positions through Emory's careers site or browse visa-sponsoring faculty roles directly on Migrate Mate.
Which visa types does Emory University commonly use for Assistant Professor hires?
Emory sponsors a broad range of visa categories for Assistant Professors. H-1B is the most common for new faculty hires. J-1 is used for visiting or exchange faculty appointments. TN applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic disciplines. For permanent residence, Emory supports EB-2 and EB-3 green card pathways, including National Interest Waivers for research-focused faculty who meet NIW criteria.
What qualifications does Emory University expect for Assistant Professor candidates?
A terminal degree in the relevant field is required across virtually all Emory Assistant Professor positions, typically a PhD, MD, JD, or equivalent. Most departments expect a demonstrated research agenda, at least one publication record or pipeline, and evidence of teaching capacity. Clinical faculty roles in the School of Medicine may also require board certification or licensure, which affects both the offer timeline and visa documentation.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a new Assistant Professor at Emory?
For an H-1B, expect three to six months from offer acceptance to USCIS approval under standard processing. Premium processing with USCIS reduces adjudication to 15 business days. If your appointment includes green card sponsorship through PERM, the full DOL and USCIS process typically runs two to three years. Emory generally initiates sponsorship paperwork after a formal offer is signed, so the clock starts at that point.
