Align your research profile with Purdue's priorities
Purdue's hiring committees look for research agendas that map onto active departmental funding areas. Review recent faculty publications and funded grants in your target department before applying, so your cover letter and research statement speak directly to those themes.
Confirm H-1B sponsorship before campus interviews
Not every department at a large research university handles sponsorship the same way. Ask the search committee coordinator during your initial phone screen whether the position is approved for H-1B sponsorship, so you're not deep in the process before finding a blocker.
Request a TN classification if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
For Canadian or Mexican nationals, TN status can get you started faster than waiting on H-1B processing. Purdue's international faculty office is experienced with TN filings for professors, and you can transition to H-1B later if you pursue permanent residency.
Prepare your credentials for PERM early
If Purdue offers you a tenure-track position and intends to sponsor a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM labor certification process requires a formal recruitment record. Gather official transcripts, degree equivalency evaluations, and publication records before your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Assistant Professor roles at Purdue
Assistant Professor openings at Purdue are posted across multiple channels and close quickly during fall hiring season. Search Migrate Mate to filter Purdue positions that actively offer visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on roles that fit your immigration situation.
Time your OPT and H-1B transition carefully
If you're completing a U.S. doctorate and starting at Purdue on F-1 OPT, the H-1B cap-gap provision protects your status if your OPT expires between April and October 1. Work with Purdue's International Students and Scholars office to file your I-129 before your OPT end date.

Find Assistant Professor at Purdue University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Purdue University sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Professors?
Yes. Purdue University has a well-established process for sponsoring H-1B visas for faculty in Assistant Professor roles. The university's International Students and Scholars office manages the filing process, and sponsorship is typically offered for both tenure-track and visiting appointments. Confirm with the specific hiring department during the offer stage, as sponsorship authorization can vary by college.
How do I apply for Assistant Professor jobs at Purdue University?
Applications are submitted through Purdue's official careers portal, and each position requires a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, and teaching statement. Most searches also request a diversity statement. Shortlisted candidates complete a campus visit with a job talk. You can browse open Assistant Professor positions at Purdue that include visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate.
Which visa types does Purdue University commonly use for Assistant Professor roles?
Purdue sponsors H-1B visas most frequently for Assistant Professors, covering both initial appointments and renewals. For Canadian and Mexican nationals, TN status is a faster option. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for doctoral candidates transitioning into postdoc or early faculty roles. Tenure-track hires are often supported through EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship via the PERM process.
What qualifications does Purdue University expect for Assistant Professor positions?
A completed doctorate in the relevant field is required for most tenure-track Assistant Professor roles. Purdue hiring committees prioritize an active research agenda, a record of peer-reviewed publication, and evidence of competitive grant funding or the potential to build one. Teaching experience and a strong fit with departmental research priorities are weighted heavily during the search process.
How do I time the visa process around Purdue's academic hiring calendar?
Purdue's faculty searches typically run from October through March, with offer letters issued in late winter or early spring. H-1B petitions filed under the annual cap must be submitted by April 1 for an October 1 start, which aligns well with Purdue's academic year. If your start date is mid-year, Purdue can file a cap-exempt H-1B petition under certain circumstances. Coordinate with the international office immediately after accepting an offer to avoid gaps in authorization.
