Align your CV to U.S. faculty standards
U.S. academic CVs differ from international formats. Lead with your teaching philosophy, peer-reviewed publications, and grant history. Indiana University hiring committees will assess your file against domestic candidates, so formatting gaps can hurt your first impression before sponsorship even comes up.
Target departments with active research funding
Departments with external grant funding at Indiana University are far more likely to move quickly on H-1B sponsorship. Check for faculty openings tied to specific research centers or funded labs, where the department already has budget and administrative infrastructure for visa filing.
Understand Indiana University's Office of International Services role
Indiana University's Office of International Services handles H-1B petitions on behalf of the university, not individual departments. Once you have an offer, your department coordinator works with that office directly. Knowing this chain upfront helps you ask the right questions during the offer stage.
Track the H-1B cap exemption for university employers
As a public research university, Indiana University qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules. This means H-1B petitions can be filed at any point in the year without waiting for the annual lottery, which is a significant practical advantage for negotiating your start date.
Ask about PERM early if you want permanent residency
For Assistant Professors, Indiana University can sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process. DOL processing timelines for PERM can run a year or more, so raise the question of long-term sponsorship intent during offer negotiations, not after you've already started.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Indiana University sponsor H-1B visas for Assistant Professors?
Yes, Indiana University sponsors H-1B visas for Assistant Professors. As a public research university, Indiana University is a cap-exempt employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any time of year without being subject to the annual cap or lottery. Sponsorship is handled through the university's Office of International Services once a formal offer is extended.
How do I apply for Assistant Professor jobs at Indiana University?
Indiana University posts Assistant Professor openings through its central careers portal and individual school or department websites. Applications typically require a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, and reference letters. Use Migrate Mate to browse open Assistant Professor positions at Indiana University that explicitly include visa sponsorship, so you can target applications where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan.
Which visa types does Indiana University commonly use for Assistant Professors?
Indiana University most commonly sponsors H-1B visas for Assistant Professors, which allows for initial three-year periods extendable to six years. For faculty on a longer-term track, the university also supports immigrant visa sponsorship through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories via the PERM labor certification process filed with the Department of Labor. The right pathway depends on your career stage and long-term residency goals.
What qualifications does Indiana University expect for Assistant Professor roles?
Indiana University typically requires a completed Ph.D. or terminal degree in the relevant field for Assistant Professor appointments, usually in hand by the position start date. Research-intensive roles often expect a demonstrated publication record and evidence of external grant potential. Teaching experience and a clear research agenda are standard expectations across most departments, with specific requirements varying by school and discipline.
How do I time my application to account for visa processing at Indiana University?
Because Indiana University is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed any time, which gives both you and the hiring department flexibility on start dates. That said, USCIS standard processing for H-1B petitions runs several months, and PERM labor certification through DOL can take a year or longer. Building at least six months of lead time between your offer and your intended start date reduces the risk of delays affecting your appointment.
