Align your credentials with U.S. standards
FIU's construction roles typically require licensure or certification recognized in Florida. If your credentials are from outside the U.S., get a formal equivalency evaluation before applying so your qualifications aren't screened out early.
Target capital projects and facilities postings
FIU regularly posts construction roles tied to campus expansion and infrastructure upgrades. Focus your search on facilities management and capital projects departments, where sponsorship-eligible positions tend to cluster in universities.
Use Migrate Mate to filter FIU construction openings
Searching broad job boards buries sponsorship-eligible roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter Florida International University construction postings by visa type so you only spend time on positions that match your immigration status.
File H-1B paperwork before your OPT expiration window closes
USCIS requires H-1B petitions to be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. Coordinate with FIU's international HR contact well before that deadline so the Labor Condition Application is certified and the petition is ready to submit on time.

Find Construction at Florida International University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Florida International University sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, Florida International University sponsors H-1B visas for Construction positions where the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field. Construction project management, facilities engineering, and infrastructure planning roles at FIU typically meet that bar. You'll need a qualifying degree and a job offer in hand before FIU can initiate the USCIS petition process.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at Florida International University?
Applications go through FIU's official careers portal, where construction and facilities roles are listed under departments like Facilities Management and Capital Development. Tailor your resume to the specific role and highlight relevant U.S.-standard certifications or licensure. If you're using Migrate Mate, you can browse FIU construction openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility before applying directly through the university's portal.
Which visa types does FIU commonly use for Construction roles?
FIU sponsors H-1B visas for construction professionals in specialty occupation roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for students completing construction management or engineering programs. TN visas apply if you're a Canadian or Mexican national in a qualifying construction-related occupation listed under USMCA. For long-term permanent residence, FIU has used EB-2 and EB-3 pathways requiring DOL PERM labor certification.
What qualifications does FIU expect for sponsored Construction positions?
FIU generally looks for a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field for roles that qualify for visa sponsorship. Florida state licensure or professional certifications such as a PMP or LEED credential strengthen your application. For senior capital project roles, FIU often expects several years of experience managing large-scale construction in an institutional or public sector environment.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Construction role at FIU?
For H-1B sponsorship, the timeline is tied to USCIS's annual cap cycle, with petitions filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. Standard processing runs three to five months after filing, though premium processing can accelerate USCIS review to 15 business days. For PERM-based green card pathways, expect 12 to 18 months for DOL labor certification alone before the immigrant petition stage begins.
