Align your credentials with U.S. licensing standards
University facilities departments expect trade licenses and certifications that map to New York State requirements. Before applying, verify your foreign credentials translate to recognizable U.S. equivalents, whether that's a contractor's license, OSHA certification, or project management credential.
Target capital projects and facilities management postings
Rochester's construction openings cluster around campus expansion and deferred maintenance programs rather than one-off builds. Roles tied to ongoing capital budgets tend to have stronger long-term sponsorship viability because the employer's need extends beyond a single project cycle.
Use Migrate Mate to filter construction openings by visa type
University of Rochester lists roles across multiple visa-eligible categories. Migrate Mate lets you filter open construction positions by the visa types the university sponsors, so you're applying to roles that already match your authorization situation.
Understand how your visa category affects construction work authorization
Some visa categories restrict you to a single employer and worksite, which matters in construction where you may move between campus locations. Confirm with the university's HR whether your specific visa type covers all project sites under their facilities umbrella before you sign an offer.
Request PERM-eligible roles if you're targeting permanent residence
If a Green Card is your goal, ask during the offer stage whether the construction position qualifies for PERM labor certification. Skilled trades and project management roles at universities can qualify under EB-3, but DOL requires the employer to test the domestic labor market first.
Factor H-1B cap timing into your construction job search calendar
Universities are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning you're not bound to the April lottery window. You can receive an H-1B approval and start work at any point in the year, which gives you flexibility that construction candidates at private firms don't have.

Find Construction at University of Rochester JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Rochester sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes. University of Rochester sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying construction positions. As a nonprofit educational institution, it holds cap-exempt status, meaning H-1B petitions can be filed and approved at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. Construction roles that meet the specialty occupation standard, typically requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a related field such as civil engineering or construction management, are eligible.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at University of Rochester?
Open positions are posted through the University of Rochester's official careers portal. Browse roles by department, focusing on Facilities and Real Estate or Capital Projects divisions, where most construction openings originate. Tailor your application to highlight relevant trade experience, certifications, and any New York State licensing. Migrate Mate also aggregates University of Rochester construction openings filtered by visa sponsorship type, making it easier to identify roles that match your authorization status before you apply.
Which visa types does University of Rochester commonly use for Construction positions?
University of Rochester sponsors several visa categories for construction roles depending on the position's requirements and the candidate's background. H-1B is common for roles requiring a degree in engineering or construction management. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional categories. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for recent graduates, and E-3 is available to Australian citizens. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways are also used for long-term hires.
What qualifications and experience does University of Rochester expect for Construction roles?
Requirements vary by role. Project manager and engineer positions typically expect a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field, along with several years of hands-on project experience. Facilities and maintenance roles may weight trade certifications and New York State licensing more heavily than formal degrees. OSHA 30 certification is frequently listed as a preferred or required credential across construction postings at large institutional employers like universities.
How do I time my application if I'm on OPT and targeting a construction role at University of Rochester?
If you're on F-1 OPT, your employment authorization is tied to a fixed end date. Because University of Rochester is cap-exempt, it can file an H-1B petition for you at any point, not just during the April cap season. Start your application process at least four to five months before your OPT expires to allow time for offer negotiation, USCIS petition preparation, and any requests for additional evidence. STEM OPT extension, if applicable, can provide additional runway.
