ROLE DESCRIPTION
As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Operations Engineering team, you will serve as a primary technical authority for the manufacturing systems and product improvements that enable the manufacturing of our grid-scale storage solutions. You will translate complex failure and line performance data into creative, robust hardware upgrades rooted in deep mechanical principles that improve our overall product design and production. By navigating a multidisciplinary team through technical ambiguity and tight deadlines, you will ensure our manufacturing capability matures alongside our product. Your ability to bridge the gap between design engineering and high-volume production will be instrumental in Form Energy’s mission to deploy batteries that ensure a reliable electric grid.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Architect and implement strategic equipment upgrades that directly improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturing stability.
- Drive the technical resolution of complex mechanical and equipment failures, ensuring success through rigorous project management and adherence to mission-critical deadlines.
- Partner cross-functionally with equipment and product design teams to identify and mitigate hardware risks early in line implementation through rapid prototyping and system-level simulation.
- Own the roadmap for production tooling and automation enhancements, focusing on how equipment design can better serve the long-term reliability and mechanical integrity of the product.
- Scale manufacturing capabilities by developing sophisticated dimensional inspection protocols and integrating advanced processes like laser welding and resin delivery.
- Mentor engineers across the organization in mechanical design best practices, GD&T, and DFM to foster a culture of technical excellence and pragmatic innovation.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Significant number of years of related work experience in mechanical design, tooling, or operations engineering, typically 7-10 years.
- Proven track record of mentoring engineering teams under aggressive timelines and implementing methods that ensure on-time project delivery and team alignment.
- Deep expertise in evolving existing designs and equipment to improve product quality.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and complex assembly management with a focus on precision, tolerance stack-up analysis, and manufacturability.
- Extensive experience in pneumatic system design, automation integration, and identifying high-risk mechanisms.
- Applied experience with advanced manufacturing techniques including precision welding, automated assembly, and high-volume production ramp-up.
- Intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic problem-solving mindset when addressing high-stakes mechanical challenges.

Align Your Credentials to DOE Requirements
Form Energy's Operations Engineer roles typically require a degree in mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering. Gather your transcripts and any credential evaluations early so your qualifications are documented before you engage a hiring manager.
Target Roles at the Weirton Facility Specifically
Form Energy's large-format iron-air battery manufacturing is concentrated at its West Virginia plant. Applying to facility-based Operations Engineer openings puts you closer to where active sponsorship decisions are made, compared to corporate generalist postings.
Browse Open Positions Through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Operations Engineer openings at Form Energy by visa type. This lets you identify which active roles are tied to H-1B or OPT sponsorship before investing time in a full application.
Understand the PERM Timeline for Long-Term Sponsorship
If Green Card sponsorship is part of your plan, PERM labor certification through DOL can take a year or more. Ask about this process during the offer stage, not after you've started, so you and the employer can set realistic expectations.
Demonstrate Hands-On Battery or Energy Storage Experience
Form Energy screens Operations Engineers for direct experience with electrochemical systems, cell assembly, or process control in hardware manufacturing. Documenting specific equipment or process improvements in your resume directly strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case.

Find Operations Engineer at Form Energy JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Form Energy sponsor H-1B visas for Operations Engineers?
Yes, Form Energy sponsors H-1B visas for Operations Engineer roles. The company operates in a specialized hardware manufacturing segment that meets USCIS specialty occupation standards, and it has supported candidates through both initial H-1B cap filings and transfers. Confirm sponsorship availability directly with the recruiting team for the specific role you're targeting, as sponsorship decisions can vary by position level and facility location.
How do I apply for Operations Engineer jobs at Form Energy?
Applications go through Form Energy's careers page, where Operations Engineer openings are listed by facility and function. You can also find and filter these roles by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate. Tailor your application to highlight process engineering, manufacturing scale-up, or electrochemical systems experience, since those directly map to what Form Energy's hiring teams prioritize for this function.
Which visa types does Form Energy commonly use for Operations Engineers?
Form Energy sponsors H-1B visas for experienced Operations Engineers and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for candidates in earlier career stages or recent graduates. TN visas are available for qualifying Canadian and Mexican nationals in engineering roles. For long-term employment, Form Energy also pursues EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways, which are common in capital-intensive hardware manufacturing companies building out permanent production teams.
What qualifications does Form Energy look for in Operations Engineers?
Form Energy typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical, chemical, industrial, or materials engineering. Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes, electrochemical systems, or battery cell production is a strong differentiator. Familiarity with process control, yield optimization, or equipment commissioning is especially relevant given Form Energy's focus on scaling iron-air battery production at its Weirton facility.
How do I time my application if my visa status has an upcoming deadline?
If you're on F-1 OPT with a deadline approaching, target Form Energy openings at least three to four months before your authorization expires to allow time for an H-1B petition before the April 1 filing window. For H-1B transfers from another employer, USCIS portability rules let you start work at Form Energy once the new petition is filed, even before approval, as long as you've held H-1B status for at least 12 months.
