Join the Applied Sensing and Health team, where innovation meets real-world impact. We develop and ship cutting-edge features that empower users to live healthier, more active lives. Our team has brought to life groundbreaking products including Workout Metrics, Hearing Aid, Crash Detection, Cardio Fitness, Walking Steadiness, Journal and more.
We're seeking a Research Operations Engineer with the technical depth to run world-class research studies across health, fitness, and safety applications - and the strategic instincts to continuously shape and improve how it gets done. That means developing research partnerships, designing and executing study protocols, delivering world-class participant experiences, and coordinating the cross-functional programs that translate research into shipped product.
Description
As a Research Operations Engineer, you will own human-centered research studies end-to-end, from targeted data collections to large-scale operations that directly enable Apple's next-generation health, fitness, and safety features. You'll partner with algorithm scientists, software and quality engineers, and external partners to engineer robust study protocols, execute technically complex studies, optimize for participant experience, perform data analysis, and translate findings into high-impact insights that drive product decisions.
You anticipate problems before they happen, move fast without cutting corners, and manage multiple concurrent efforts with clarity and precision. The strongest candidates are as comfortable driving a complex study to completion as stepping back to redesign the process that got them there - you write the playbook, and improve it when something better is possible.
You bring deep GenAI fluency - not as a credential, but as a lens through which you approach every workflow. You embed tooling directly into operations, build purpose-built automations and agents, and make the whole team more capable in the process.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end execution of research studies - from protocol design and vendor partnerships to data analysis and stakeholder readouts
- Build and own the frameworks, tools, and processes that set the standard for how research gets done, from vendor evaluation to study operations, and operating strategically to up-level the team at every stage
- Apply GenAI tools daily; embeds tools into daily workflows, build internal automations and purpose-built agents that scale operations and team impact
- Proactively identify risks, resolve problems with speed and precision, and drive process improvements that make the team faster
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Statistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, or related field
Extensive expertise in designing, executing, and analyzing human-centered research for health, wellness, or fitness products
Track record of using GenAI to build agents, automations, and other tooling that scale research operations
Strong technical skills with the ability to analyze sensor and study data, understand algorithm designs, and convert data into actionable product insights
Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritizing by urgency and impact
Deep problem-solving instincts with a track record of identifying and resolving complex issues independently
Excellent communication skills; able to simplify complex concepts for diverse technical and non-technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of research operations experience in a fast-paced environment, shipping technical, user-friendly products
- Independent self-starter who thrives in ambiguous, rapidly evolving environments
- Fast learner of complex hardware, software systems, and unfamiliar technologies
- Passion for the intersection of technology with health, wellness, and fitness
- Ability to drive change and influence direction without direct authority

Align your resume to Apple's operations stack
Apple's Operations Engineer roles emphasize NPI (new product introduction), supplier quality systems, and manufacturing process design. Frame your experience around those specific areas rather than generic engineering credentials to clear initial screening filters.
Target roles tied to specific product lines
Apple posts Operations Engineer openings across distinct hardware programs like Mac, iPhone, and accessories. Applying to a role tied to a product line you have direct manufacturing experience in strengthens your case for both the hiring manager and the LCA specialty occupation determination.
Confirm your visa category before the offer stage
Apple sponsors multiple work visa types for this function. Know in advance whether your situation calls for an H-1B, E-3, H-1B1 visa, or TN so you can have an informed conversation with the recruiting team before an offer is extended.
Prepare an equivalency assessment for your degree
USCIS requires that your degree directly support the specialty occupation. If your engineering degree is from outside the U.S. or is in a tangentially related field, get a credential evaluation done before you receive an offer to avoid delays in the I-129 filing.
Track the DOL prevailing wage for your work location
Apple operates engineering sites across multiple states including California and Texas. The Labor Condition Application ties your offered wage to the DOL prevailing wage for the specific work location, so verify that the role's compensation aligns with the correct wage level for your experience tier.
Use Migrate Mate to find open roles that sponsor
Operations Engineer openings at Apple can be spread across product teams and locations. Use Migrate Mate to filter and browse open positions at Apple that include visa sponsorship, so you're applying to roles with a confirmed path rather than guessing from general job boards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Operations Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Operations Engineer roles. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual lottery, Apple typically submits registrations in March for a late-September start date. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, Apple can file a transfer petition outside the lottery, which significantly simplifies the timeline.
How do I apply for Operations Engineer jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers portal or browse open roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions with confirmed visa sponsorship. Focus your application on hardware operations experience relevant to Apple's product lines, such as NPI processes, supplier management, or yield improvement programs. Tailoring your resume to the specific product team's scope improves your chances of clearing automated screening.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Operations Engineer roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT or CPT for Operations Engineer positions. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the TN visa under USMCA. F-1 students completing engineering programs can use OPT or CPT to start working while a longer-term petition is prepared.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Operations Engineer roles?
Most Operations Engineer roles at Apple require a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Apple places strong emphasis on experience with manufacturing processes, supply chain systems, and data-driven quality improvement. Advanced degrees or direct experience with consumer electronics manufacturing can strengthen your profile, particularly for senior-level postings.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Apple Operations Engineer offer?
Timeline depends on visa type. An E-3 or TN can be obtained in weeks since neither requires USCIS petition approval. A new H-1B requires waiting for the annual lottery, which runs March through September. USCIS standard H-1B processing takes three to six months after filing, though Apple may elect premium processing to reduce that to 15 business days.
