ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Factory Software team is seeking a Factory Software Engineer to bridge the gap between physical manufacturing hardware and enterprise-level orchestration. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and ownership of the mission-critical software services and data architectures that power our entire factory ecosystem. You will function as a key partner to our Manufacturing, Automation, and Quality teams, building high-performance systems that enable real-time process control, material flow orchestration, and end-to-end product genealogy. You will collaborate closely with Data Engineering and Platform teams to leverage our on-prem and cloud infrastructure, building scalable, custom solutions that serve as the digital backbone for our first-of-a-kind manufacturing lines.
What you'll do:
-
Architect and Scale the Factory Stack: Design, develop, and deliver the end-to-end software services and data architectures—built in Go and Postgres—that orchestrate novel battery electrodes and assembly lines.
-
Build the Digital Backbone: Drive the integration of real-time machine data with high-level business logic, ensuring seamless material flow, process control, and comprehensive product genealogy across the entire factory.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with experienced software, data, controls, process, and quality engineers to bridge the gap between hardware and software, developing a high-quality, high-performance digital factory ecosystem.
-
Operational Excellence: Take ownership of the systems you build by participating in rotating on-call shifts and providing on-the-floor support, ensuring rapid problem-solving and continuous 24/7 production.
-
Continuous Innovation: Leverage on-prem and cloud infrastructure to build scalable solutions that replace legacy silos with a unified, software-driven manufacturing environment.
What you'll bring:
-
5+ years of industry experience building and scaling production-grade software services
-
Professional expertise writing high-performance, reusable code in Go within a collaborative environment
-
Deep experience in relational database design, schema management, and query optimization using Postgres
-
Demonstrated ability to architect and own end-to-end software systems that orchestrate complex, real-world processes
-
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to relay technical architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders
-
Proven track record of working independently with excellent time management and the ability to prioritize critical path tasks in a high-stakes environment
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
-
Significant experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics environment working with software that interacts with physical hardware is highly desirable
-
Experience collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Automation, Process, and Operations teams, to define system requirements
-
Experience with distributed systems, message brokers, or containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) is a plus
-
A passion for technical mentorship and a desire to drive engineering excellence in a fast-paced, mission-driven startup environment
LOCATION
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV—an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
Humanity is a cornerstone of Form Energy’s culture, and we make sure our compensation and benefits reflect that. Form Energy offers competitive salaries, stock options, and a holistic benefits package to ensure all employees have what they need to thrive while working here.
When it comes to you and your family’s health, we cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees - and 80% of healthcare premiums for dependents. This starts from day one. We also offer at least 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents (up to 20 weeks for birthing parents), and generous vacation policies to give employees time to recharge when needed.

Align your portfolio to hardware-software integration
Form Energy's engineering stack bridges physical battery systems and software control layers. Highlight experience with firmware interfaces, real-time data pipelines, or industrial control systems. Generic web or app development experience is less compelling here than domain-adjacent work.
Target roles before OPT authorization lapses
F-1 OPT gives you 12 months of work authorization, with a 60-day grace period after it ends. Form Energy sponsors F-1 CPT and OPT, so starting your application process at least three months before your OPT expires gives the employer time to initiate sponsorship without a gap.
Verify your specialty occupation framing for H-1B
USCIS requires H-1B roles to qualify as specialty occupations requiring a directly related bachelor's degree or higher. For Senior Software Engineering at a hardware company, frame your credentials around electrical engineering, computer engineering, or embedded systems to strengthen the degree-to-role connection.
Ask about LCA timing during the offer stage
Before Form Energy can file your H-1B petition, they must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL. This step takes around seven business days under normal conditions. Clarify with the recruiting team whether this is factored into your start date timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified Form Energy openings
Senior Software Engineering roles at Form Energy are listed with sponsorship status confirmed. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Form Energy positions that match your visa type, so you apply to roles where sponsorship is already on the table rather than guessing.
Prepare documentation for PERM if targeting permanent residency
Form Energy sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, which typically require PERM labor certification from DOL. Gather performance reviews, educational transcripts, and a detailed job duties summary early. PERM timelines can stretch beyond a year, so starting the conversation at offer is practical.

Does Form Energy sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Form Energy sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles. The process requires your employer to file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting the H-1B petition to USCIS. Senior Software Engineering typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the degree requirements in computer science, electrical engineering, or a directly related field.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Form Energy?
You can browse and apply for Senior Software Engineering positions at Form Energy through Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles with confirmed sponsorship eligibility so you are not spending time on applications that will not support your visa situation. From there, applications go through Form Energy's standard recruiting process, which typically includes a technical screen, system design rounds, and a final interview loop focused on engineering depth and cross-functional collaboration.
Which visa types does Form Energy commonly use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Form Energy supports H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Senior Software Engineering positions, along with EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for longer-term permanent residency goals. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals whose roles fall under eligible USMCA categories. The right visa type depends on your nationality, current status, and whether you are entering or already in the U.S.
What qualifications does Form Energy expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Senior Software Engineering roles at Form Energy typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, along with substantial professional experience in software systems that interact with hardware or physical infrastructure. Familiarity with distributed systems, embedded software, or energy technology is valued given the company's focus on grid-scale battery products. Strong fundamentals in system design and cross-team technical collaboration are common expectations at the senior level.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Senior Software Engineering role at Form Energy?
Timeline depends on your visa type. F-1 OPT authorization is typically in place at hiring if your EAD is already approved. H-1B cap-subject filings open in March for an October 1 start, requiring early planning. TN status for Canadians can be obtained at the border with the right documentation. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card processing through PERM and USCIS can take two or more years depending on your country of chargeability.
