ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Factory Software team is seeking a Factory Software Engineer to bridge the gap between physical manufacturing hardware and enterprise-level orchestration. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and ownership of the mission-critical software services and data architectures that power our entire factory ecosystem. You will function as a key partner to our Manufacturing, Automation, and Quality teams, building high-performance systems that enable real-time process control, material flow orchestration, and end-to-end product genealogy. You will collaborate closely with Data Engineering and Platform teams to leverage our on-prem and cloud infrastructure, building scalable, custom solutions that serve as the digital backbone for our first-of-a-kind manufacturing lines.
What you'll do:
-
Architect and Scale the Factory Stack: Design, develop, and deliver the end-to-end software services and data architectures—built in Go and Postgres—that orchestrate novel battery electrodes and assembly lines.
-
Build the Digital Backbone: Drive the integration of real-time machine data with high-level business logic, ensuring seamless material flow, process control, and comprehensive product genealogy across the entire factory.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with experienced software, data, controls, process, and quality engineers to bridge the gap between hardware and software, developing a high-quality, high-performance digital factory ecosystem.
-
Operational Excellence: Take ownership of the systems you build by participating in rotating on-call shifts and providing on-the-floor support, ensuring rapid problem-solving and continuous 24/7 production.
-
Continuous Innovation: Leverage on-prem and cloud infrastructure to build scalable solutions that replace legacy silos with a unified, software-driven manufacturing environment.
What you'll bring:
-
5+ years of industry experience building and scaling production-grade software services
-
Professional expertise writing high-performance, reusable code in Go within a collaborative environment
-
Deep experience in relational database design, schema management, and query optimization using Postgres
-
Demonstrated ability to architect and own end-to-end software systems that orchestrate complex, real-world processes
-
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to relay technical architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders
-
Proven track record of working independently with excellent time management and the ability to prioritize critical path tasks in a high-stakes environment
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
-
Significant experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics environment working with software that interacts with physical hardware is highly desirable
-
Experience collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Automation, Process, and Operations teams, to define system requirements
-
Experience with distributed systems, message brokers, or containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) is a plus
-
A passion for technical mentorship and a desire to drive engineering excellence in a fast-paced, mission-driven startup environment
LOCATION
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV—an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
Humanity is a cornerstone of Form Energy’s culture, and we make sure our compensation and benefits reflect that. Form Energy offers competitive salaries, stock options, and a holistic benefits package to ensure all employees have what they need to thrive while working here.

Align your resume to embedded and controls work
Form Energy's software roles often touch battery management systems, real-time controls, and hardware-adjacent infrastructure. Highlighting experience with C++, Python, or systems programming in hardware environments signals direct fit for their engineering teams.
File your H-1B registration before April
USCIS opens H-1B cap registrations each March for an April 1 start date. If Form Energy extends you an offer in Q1, confirm they'll submit your registration in that window before you accept or decline competing offers.
Verify your TN eligibility before the offer stage
Canadian and Mexican nationals can enter on a TN visa under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer categories, which Form Energy sponsors. Confirm your degree and job description satisfy DOL's category definitions before negotiating your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Form Energy's open Software Engineer roles
Not all posted roles at Form Energy explicitly state sponsorship availability. Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa type so you can target Software Engineer openings where H-1B, OPT, or Green Card sponsorship is confirmed before applying.
Understand the PERM timeline before pursuing permanent residence
Form Energy sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green cards, but the PERM labor certification process through DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can be filed. Factor this into your long-term planning from your first year on the job.

Find Software Engineer at Form Energy JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Form Energy sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Form Energy sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, the company will need to submit a registration during USCIS's annual lottery window each March. Cap-exempt candidates, such as those transferring from a university or nonprofit, can file outside that window. Confirm sponsorship with your recruiter early in the process so timing aligns with your current status.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Form Energy?
Applications go through Form Energy's careers page, where Software Engineer roles are listed by team and function. Before applying, review the job description closely for hardware-adjacent requirements common at Form Energy, such as systems programming or energy infrastructure experience. You can also browse and filter Form Energy's open Software Engineer positions by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate to confirm a role fits your immigration situation before submitting.
Which visa types does Form Energy commonly use for Software Engineer roles?
Form Energy sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for Software Engineers, and also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways. TN is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role qualifies under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer category. F-1 students on OPT can typically begin work within their 60-day grace period, with H-1B sponsorship as a longer-term option.
What qualifications does Form Energy expect from Software Engineer candidates?
Form Energy's Software Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies H-1B specialty occupation requirements. Roles often emphasize systems-level programming, data pipelines, or controls software given the company's hardware focus. Candidates with experience in energy, manufacturing, or embedded systems tend to be a strong match for the team's technical environment.
How do I plan my timeline if Form Energy is sponsoring my visa?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa type. F-1 OPT authorization can take up to 90 days from your DSO application, so start early. H-1B sponsorship through the annual cap locks you into an October 1 start date if selected in the lottery. TN status can be obtained at the port of entry, making it faster. For Green Card sponsorship, the PERM process through DOL adds at least a year before USCIS receives the I-140 petition.
