Get your teaching credentials evaluated early
Louisiana requires state licensure before you can teach, so submit your foreign transcripts to a NACES-approved credential evaluation service well before applying. Jefferson Parish Schools will expect a comparable U.S. bachelor's degree in education or a subject-specific field.
Target subject areas with chronic shortages
Jefferson Parish Schools consistently recruits for hard-to-fill middle school subjects like math, science, and special education. Applying in these areas strengthens your case for sponsorship because the district has a documented need that justifies filing with USCIS or DOL.
Understand how district H-1B sponsorship works
Public school districts file H-1B petitions as cap-exempt employers through qualifying affiliations, meaning Jefferson Parish Schools can sponsor year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Your start date can align directly with the academic calendar.
Ask about the PERM timeline during offer negotiations
If Jefferson Parish Schools offers EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, the PERM labor certification process with DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before your I-140 petition even begins. Confirm the district's willingness to start PERM before you accept the offer.
Line up your OPT or CPT paperwork before the school year
If you're on F-1 status, your OPT authorization must be active before your first day of employment. Coordinate with your DSO to request EAD processing at least 90 days before Jefferson Parish Schools' semester start date to avoid employment gaps.
Browse open teaching roles through Migrate Mate
Jefferson Parish Schools posts middle school teacher openings that include visa sponsorship eligibility. Search Migrate Mate to filter specifically for sponsored education roles at this district and track new postings as the hiring season opens each spring.

Does Jefferson Parish Schools sponsor H-1B visas for Middle School Teachers?
Yes. Jefferson Parish Schools sponsors H-1B visas for qualified middle school teachers. As a public school district, it may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, which means petitions can be submitted at any point in the year rather than being subject to the annual 85,000-slot cap and lottery. This makes sponsorship more predictable and easier to align with the academic calendar.
How do I apply for Middle School Teacher jobs at Jefferson Parish Schools?
Applications go through the Jefferson Parish Schools district hiring portal, where you can filter by grade level and subject area. You can also browse open roles that include visa sponsorship eligibility through Migrate Mate, which surfaces sponsored positions specifically. Before applying, confirm your Louisiana teaching license status or that your credentials are under evaluation, since the district requires state licensure.
Which visa types does Jefferson Parish Schools use for Middle School Teacher roles?
Jefferson Parish Schools sponsors H-1B visas for teachers in specialty occupation roles, as well as immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 through PERM labor certification. F-1 OPT and CPT are also used for recent graduates from U.S. universities. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals who hold qualifying education credentials and a confirmed teaching offer.
What qualifications does Jefferson Parish Schools expect for Middle School Teacher positions?
The district requires a bachelor's degree in education or a subject-specific field such as mathematics, science, or English language arts, along with an active Louisiana teaching certificate. For visa sponsorship purposes, your foreign degree must be evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's by a NACES-approved agency. Classroom experience and subject-area endorsements significantly strengthen applications, especially in shortage subjects.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a teaching role at Jefferson Parish Schools?
Timeline depends on the visa type. An H-1B petition can be processed within a few months if the district uses USCIS premium processing, which expedites the decision to 15 business days. F-1 OPT candidates should start EAD applications 90 days before their employment start date. EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is a longer process, typically spanning two or more years from initial filing to approval.
