Tailor your portfolio to Microsoft's scale
Microsoft Data Science Intern interviews stress applied ML at scale. Showcase projects using Azure, large language models, or distributed data pipelines. Reviewers respond to work that mirrors the kind of infrastructure Microsoft already runs.
Target teams that convert interns to full-time
Microsoft's intern-to-return-offer pipeline is one of the strongest in the industry. Identify teams like Microsoft Research, Bing, and Azure AI, where intern projects frequently lead to sponsored full-time offers and subsequent visa filing.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Australian citizens should specify E-3 eligibility and Canadians should flag TN qualification early. Microsoft's recruiting team routes sponsorship decisions differently by visa type, so surfacing this during the recruiter screen prevents delays later.
Understand the H-1B cap timing for post-internship conversion
If your internship converts to full-time, Microsoft must file your H-1B by April 1 for an October 1 start. USCIS registration opens in March, so confirm your return offer timeline aligns with this window before accepting.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship type
Search for Data Science Intern openings at Microsoft filtered by your visa category on Migrate Mate. This surfaces roles where Microsoft has an active sponsorship history for your specific status, saving significant research time.

Find Data Science Intern at Microsoft JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Data Science Interns?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Data Science roles, typically when an internship converts to a full-time position. Sponsorship for the intern period itself depends on your current status. F-1 students usually work under CPT or OPT during the internship, with H-1B sponsorship initiated once a full-time return offer is extended.
How do I apply for Data Science Intern jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal at careers.microsoft.com. Roles open in late summer and fall for the following summer cycle. Your resume should emphasize applied ML experience, programming in Python or R, and familiarity with cloud platforms like Azure. You can also find and filter current openings by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly use for Data Science Intern roles?
During the internship itself, most international students work under F-1 CPT or OPT. For post-internship full-time conversion, Microsoft sponsors H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, H-1B1 for Singapore and Chile nationals, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term employees.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for Data Science Intern candidates?
Microsoft expects candidates to be enrolled in a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Strong candidates demonstrate proficiency in Python or R, experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, and ideally a project or research publication involving large datasets or model deployment.
How do I handle the timeline between my internship ending and visa status changing?
If you're on F-1 OPT and your internship ends without a return offer, you have a 60-day grace period before your status lapses. USCIS does not extend this period. If a return offer and H-1B filing are in progress, confirm with Microsoft's immigration team that your authorized work period bridges the gap to your H-1B start date.
